The palace was nestled atop a hill just a mile or so outside the city. There were no direct roads in or out. A star yacht sat on one of two landing pads just inside the interior walls. A shuttle was parked on the other. The smaller shuttle was how King Ches traveled around Earth. The larger ship was for off-world travel only. There were several layers of protection within and outside the compound. As expected of the highest seat within the Earth Kingdom.
Along the outer perimeter were motion sensors and automatic deployable turrets. High up on the surrounding walls, there were guards and lookouts in the higher towers. Several droids also scanned the entire palace during rotating patrols. It was more or less, a heavily secured fortress.
Ches, himself, was still working despite it being well into the early morning hours. He sat nestled comfortably in his bed with a tablet in his paws. He was scrolling through various news feeds on the device and making preparations for the delegation meeting that Radia invited him to by name.
He scratched at his ear and then yawned, his eyes drifting away from the screen for a moment. Just long enough to catch the Shinjin’s silhouette across the room. His small eyes widened quickly and he instinctively reached for a small device on the nightstand next to his bed, but it was not where it was supposed to be.
The figure in the shadows stepped forward and lifted his hand to reveal the small device that Ches had been trying to reach. It had a large red button in the center which read ALERT in large white letters. By pressing it, all of his guards and security forces would be alerted to his predicament. However, with it being out of reach, Ches was at the will of this intruder.
The King of Earth looked at the door and then back at the shadowy figure in his bedroom. He opened his mouth to call out to them, but suddenly a golden gloved hand snapped his muzzle closed again. Ches looked up to see Xell in his golden armor. The King started to breath heavily as the Kai spoke.
“Your Majesty, I mean you no harm… but we do need to have a discussion and your protective detail would make that difficult.”
Ches tried to pull away, but Xell’s grip held him in place.
“As this is time sensitive, I don’t really have the luxury or patience to wait. My name is Xell. I am the Guardian of Earth. I inherited this responsibility from Dende. I need to discuss the future of the Kingdom.”
Xell paused, looking over the frightened King.
“As a Guardian I’ve sworn to protect this planet and its people. I promise I will not harm you.”
After a short pause where Xell took measure of the King’s temperament, he finally released him. Ches pawed at his snout and sniffed a few times before speaking.
“This is highly unusual, Guardian. What is it you want with me?”
Xell grinned and conjured a chair. He took a seat, crossed one leg over another and continued.
“Simply put, your crown… metaphorically speaking. I wish to bear that particular burden myself and relieve you of it.”
“And what makes you think I would agree to such a demand?”
The Kai narrowed his eyes.
“You won’t have a choice.”
A confused and irritated look fell over the King. He moved as if he was going to yell but Xell held up a single finger as to gesture for him to stop. A low growl creeped out from Ches’s muzzle and Xell continued speaking.
“While I admire your determination and your dedication to this kingdom, unfortunately you are weak. You’ve died once before even. The last time this planet was threatened. I was there. I fought off your murderer. He fled with what was left of his tail between his legs.”
A smirk pulled at his lips as he remembered the end of that particular battle.
“Queen Radia (Lute) is a powerful Saiyan warrior, feared even among her own people. Emperor Polaris (Legume) commands the largest military in the galaxy and has unprecedented strength in his own right. Emperor Carambolis’s (Cam) faction is quickly expanding. Like the others, he is also incredibly powerful.”
Xell paused to take a breath and let that sink in.
“You cannot defend yourself, let alone this kingdom and I will no longer do it from the outside. I will not have Earth see her King slain again.”
The Kai let out a sigh. He was bluffing. He knew good and well he’d continue to protect the planet whether or not Ches agreed to his demands.
“So here is my proposal. I will become the new King, a title and position purely of ceremony. You will take on the role of Prime Minister and continue exactly as you have befor-“
“As your puppet.”
“Hmm… you’re cleverer than I originally gave you credit. My intention is to remove the target from your back and place it on mine. A small caveat of that will be that you will heed my instruction from time to time as regards policy and such.”
Xell narrowed his eyes once more.
“I have been protecting this planet from threats that never saw the light of day, threats that none of you know about. All because I was there to stop them. This planet still spins because I did my job. If you want me to continue to do that job, if you want lasting peace, you will agree to my terms.”
Xell stood from his chair and stared hard at Ches. The King debated the different options in his mind for a moment or two, but in the end, he knew what Xell said was true. Without the various heroes that had protected this planet and it’s cities, the Earth would have been gone a long time ago.
Ches sighed in defeat.
“Fine. I’ll have my assistant draft up a press release for the morning. We will need to go over the particulars.”
Xell nodded.
“You made the right decision.”
Later that morning Prime Minister Ches delivered the news to the people of the Earth Kingdom while King Xell stood next to him as smug as ever. It was all pomp and circumstance, nothing but trivial lime-lighting. The real test would be at Queen Radia’s gathering. It would be the first time Xell represented the Earth Kingdom as its King and not just its Guardian.
