CHARACTER BIO
CHARACTER SHEET
NAME: Van
RACE: Earthling
AGE: Appears 13-ish (Immortal)
GENDER: Male
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 152 cm (5'0") / 50 kg (110 lbs)
APPEARANCE:
Despite having the appearance of a young teenager, Van is actually much older, almost 600 years actually. He is somewhat short, with messy blond hair and a pair of emerald eyes. He also lacks facial hair, further accentuating his adolescent appearance. Regardless of his stature and youthful looks, his body is relatively toned from years of training and adventuring. He is often shown wearing an ordinary, clean white button-front shirt and a black sleeveless vest on top with a loosely worn tie. His broken sword's scabbard is held on by a green leather belt with gold-colored buckles. Without any socks, he wears a pair of black boots. His most distinctive trait is a tattoo at the top of his left bicep, just below his shoulder.
MOTIVATIONS:
Currently, Van finds himself traveling from planet to planet in search of rare and ancient artifacts and treasures. He had always had a sense of adventure, but since he was a baby, his father would tell him tales of his various expeditions and discoveries. When it was time for him to leave home, Van would ultimately follow in his father’s footsteps, armed with an immeasurable curiosity about the world at large.
Van typically keeps to himself, being more interested in things than people and their politics. However, as the universe delves further into chaos, he realizes that he may have to soon pick a side and fight. That is, if he wants there to be anything left to discover and explore.
QUIRKS:
Van is very energetic and cheeky, loving a good joke and giggling during battle. He is often quick-witted and displays great affection and even insight towards his companions. He is extremely fearless and determined, not being afraid to take chances and being enthusiastic about discovering new things and places.
He is a calm soul, rarely showing intense emotions. He tends to come across as very carefree. Van is always looking to do the right thing. He often acts polite and respectful towards both his companions and strangers but can be cocky at times. He is also appreciative of weapons and prefers for them to be treated with care.
While usually very aloof and free-spirited, Van is capable of extreme rage. This is evident if his friends or innocent people are treated maliciously or harmed in any way. He can also become enraged if anyone tries to touch or steal his sword.
BONDS:
Van keeps good relations with most people he has come across on his journeys. He routinely works with merchants and antiquities brokers and seems to be welcomed back warmly whenever he returns to an establishment he has visited before. To his knowledge, Van can count his enemies on one hand, and even then they still seem to hold him in high regard. Most are rival hunters, searching for treasure, antiques, or even people.
BACKSTORY:
Ten years after the Tournament of Power, a baby was dropped off at one of the orphanages in North City. Eventually, the boy was adopted by a loving mother and father. They named him Van and he spent many years in their care. Unfortunately, the mother died in a car accident. Van learned early to swallow his emotions and put on a strong facade. He did this mostly for his father, because he too was hurting.
By the time he was twelve, Van’s adoptive father started to take him on expeditions. He was an explorer and archaeologist. He even taught at a nearby university. The man was a great influence in Van’s life. So much so, that when he died in a tunnel collapse, Van continued in his stead.
Through his father’s connections, he eventually learned of the existence of the Dragon Balls and went out in search of them. The quest took the better part of a year, but he was finally able to gather them all together. To his surprise, an actual dragon appeared and asked him what wish he wanted granted. Having been surrounded by death and a seemingly unquenchable hunger for discovery, Van wished for immortality. It seemed like a good idea at the time. If he never died, he could explore to his heart’s content. What he didn’t realize at the time was that he would remain the same age for the rest of his life as well.
So, with an immortal body and his father’s wealth, he set off in search of adventure. His journey led him to many places on Earth and he met many interesting people and creatures. In this time, he not only trained his mind but also his body. Van studied under many martial artists. He even met the likes of Mr. Satan and through him, he met the actual heroes of many past events and came to realize the mustached man was quite the fraud.
It was during his training with these legendary martial artists that Van began to develop a strange and interesting ability. What he thought was just an affinity to quickly grasp new things, turned into something else entirely. He quickly realized that he could fully mimic other people’s abilities just by observing them in action. His copies were never equal to the real thing, but the fact that he could mirror them so easily was stunning to those he trained with.
Hundreds of years passed. Van had explored everything there was to explore on Earth. As technology finally caught up to his curiosity, he left the humble blue planet and set off to the depths of space to explore strange new worlds and meet new species.
It was during one of his adventures in space that he was cursed while excavating an ancient tomb. He had done his best to heed the warnings of the locals, but he fell into the trap all the same. Now, whenever his emotions flare up, a black mark appears on his forehead. He loses all sense of self and goes into a berserker rage. While in this form, he can manipulate the dark energy around his body into weapons, wings, extra limbs, anything really. Unfortunately, once he comes out of it, Van has no memory of what happened or what he did.
Because of this, for several hundred years or so he laid low, trying to find a cure or remedy that would absolve him of the curse. His quest took him to Otherworld where he met all sorts of beings magical and otherwise. Unfortunately, no one could help him.
It was around this time that the incident during the Peace Accord happened. Van was just getting back to Earth when he heard about it. With tensions rising and the ensuing chaos, he realized that he might not be able to stay in the background for much longer. Eventually he would be pulled into the conflict.
CALL TO ACTION:
The breakdown at the Peace Accords because Van understands the power dynamics and the vacuum that resulted from it. Eventually his home, Earth, would become involved and he would have to fight to protect it.
