Somewhere near the edge of the northern region, a dark forest reached as far as eye could see. Enormous trees plunged everything beneath them into a suffocating shadow where only the hardiest brambles and strangest mushrooms survived. The single road that slither through it was narrow and treacherous, barely passable for a wagon. All kinds of stories surrounded these vast areas of barely charted wilderness. One in particular was especially infamous around here. In hushed tones the local villagers told a story, conveyed a warning, to any traveler curious and foolish enough to ask. Beware the wicked witch Nevermore living in the woods, they all said with that hollow, fearful look in their eyes. Well, most modern travelers might scoff at such fairy tales.
Unfortunately for them, some stories were all too true...
Anyone with the suitable skill could feel unnatural power emanating from the woods. Following the sinister sensation would eventually lead one to a tiny hut at the very heart of the mysterious forest. From afar it resembled a wildly overgrown mushroom, venomously violet cap and all, nestled beneath massive, twisted trees. A fence of thornvine surrounded a small yard lined with ominously colored mushrooms and a stone path led across it to the modest front door. Through the single, round window on the wall one could see a soft glow of light inside. Magical fire flickered in the stone hearth and in turn made shadows dance along the walls. Someone was definitely in there.
A pitch black cauldron was boiling and bubbling with a glowing crimson concoction. Humming a old tune, a young girl was attending to the mixture, adding various herbs and mushrooms with practiced precision. Long, dark robes swept the floor with every motion. Lavender hair framed a delicate and deathly pale visage. At a glance she seemed rather... small and frail, honestly. Not quite the old and evil crone her infamy implied. There was fear here. Droves of it.
Most of the villagers feared Aubus. He clearly didn't belong among them. After all he was an odd stranger adorned in weird robes, unlike the modest style of the surrounding area. Aubus could practically smell their fear, see and hear them whispering as he walked through their quaint village.
Odd one... strange... evil magic... witch... Nevermore.
It was but a routine check-in, traversing some of the border villages and towns away from the bustle of the city. Aubus wanted to be a divine presence for these mortals, and to grant them the assurance that the Gods had not abandoned them. From the looks of it, however, most of them were unaware that he was, in fact, a Kai. Most treated him with cold apprehension.
Finally, Aubus questioned one of the villagers about this Nevermore witch. The squat man pointed a shaky finger in the direction of the woods before waddling away as fast as his short legs could carry him. Ultimately, it was the odd power that the Kai could feel emanating from the woods that caused him to follow the lead and investigate its source. After all, if something malevolent was harassing these beings, it was his duty to put an end to it.
After following the trail and coming upon the cottage, the sensation of malevolence grew. It was a familiar energy, not quite the energy of demons, but close to it. Nothing good could come of that.
Without a second thought, Aubus floated up into the air until he could get a full view of the mushroom structure. Charging a ball of purple ki in his hand, he fired upon the dwelling without a second thought, a large blast that would envelop and hopefully destroy whatever presence dwelled within it in one decisive action.
It was better to deal with it now before it became an even bigger threat in the future.

The blast shook the the gloomy scenery. When the dust and scraps of wood finally settled, the poor, little hut was gone... Yet a slender silhouette still stood in the middle of the devastation. Slowly, calmly, she turned and lifted her gaze upwards. Messy hair aside, she seemed eerily unscathed. Dark energies rose from her robes, coiling protectively around her frail frame. A single, shining red eye peeked from behind the ruffled bangs, aiming its cold glare at the flying foe. "Never heard of knocking, have you?" While her voice held a refined chime, like a silver bell, her words dripped with sarcasm. "Well, if it was my attention you so desperately wanted, then congratulations, you shall have it..." As she picked the magic wand from her belt, her venomous tone darkened.
"...For the rest of your forfeit life."
Lilith flicked the wand to full length and aimed it at the oddly-dressed intruder. Usually she would’ve asked for a name, as was customary in any proper duel, but this would-be assassin was not worth the effort. After all... What would she do with the name of a dead man? "I call forth the wrath of winter..." The temperature dropped. Her words turned into white mist. On the tip of the wand, between two sharp prongs, a glimmering snowflake formed. "Frost Hex." Aubus had hoped this would not become an all out battle. The purpose of his attack was to keep the threat contained, deal with it in a manner that would not put the townspeople in harm's way. Not only had the being survived the blast that decimated the hut and portions of the surrounding forest, but it appeared to have come away from the blast completely unscathed.
Not it, but she.
She was pale and gaunt in appearance, dressed in robes that exuded tendrils of dark energy, curling protectively around her frame.
Magic.
The thought came to him the moment she lifted her wand and aimed, firing off a hex in his direction. Aubus sidestepped the attack, though it came close to hitting him—so close he could feel the frigid temperature of the attack as it exploded in the air behind him, dispersing in a shock wave of terribly cold wind. Even his right cheek, which the attack had still mildly grazed despite his dodging it, had formed a thin layer of frost from the proximity of her attack. Aubus casually wiped it away, hands held behind his back as he observed her.
"So the rumors of a witch are true. And a rather powerful one at that." Aubus frowned, pushing out with his senses to gauge her ominous ki. At his current level, they would be evenly matched. This would not be a simple task, but he was determined to be rid of her for the sake of the townsfolk.
"You will terrorize these people no longer, witch. I am a Kai, and it is my duty to protect all life."
His aura flared to life, bright purple ki dancing around his small stature. There was no point in hiding his power level.
"I cannot abide your presence here any longer."
Raising a hand, Aubus fired off two consecutive blasts of energy at her. More or less, he wanted to gauge how capable a combatant she was before he truly unleashed his power. There was no need to go overboard, after all.

Truth to be told, Lilith hadn’t been expecting much from the assassin. Mere mortals could not hope to even touch someone of her level and status. Only... She wasn’t facing a mere mortal anymore. Her eyes widened when she realized something about the energy felt off, but it was far too late to dodge. The attacks tore right through her defensive enchantments and sent her tumbling backwards into a tree.
Yet despite the painful slam and the sickening crack... The young witch soon pushed herself upright with a calm mutter. "A Kai, hm? That explains an awful lot..." A drip of blood ran down the corner of her mouth. "About this nauseating energy. And attitude." Irritation tugged at her patience and her power flared with it. Eyes narrowing she glared at the opponent. "Your arrogance shall be your undoing." Her cloak had gotten badly torn as well, showing the pale skin beneath. Luckily it was nothing too scandalous... Yet... Worse than any physical injury though, he had hurt her pride. And for that he would pay dearly.
Lilith gathered her composure and begun uttering an incantation. "From Hell’s heart I summon thee..." Unnatural embers formed a sinister, star-shaped symbol at her feet. "Come forth, herald of death, Banshee." In a flash of infernal flames, another feminine figure appeared on the ruined yard. Long, pale hair flowed in the breeze. White mist clung around her like a cloak, veiling her fair features. Her skin was as white as fresh snow, yet her eyes were red as if she had been crying. "Keep him busy." The ghastly woman twitched, squirming in pain, failing to resist the cold command. She unleashed a chilling scream, loud and foul enough to make the very air waver as it surged towards the Kai. If he didn’t his shield his ears, he might soon find them bleeding...
While the ghost provided a distraction, the witch focused on casting another spell. "Suffer the pains of conquest, famine and pestilence as your body withers away..." She aimed her hand at the flying foe and baleful energies engulfed her fingers. Glowing hues of yellow, blue and violet swirled together. "Black Death." A massive blast of malicious magic erupted around the Kai. The air turned thick with the stench of sickness, rot and decay. She poured power into the potent curse, to ensure even godly fortitude wouldn’t save him. If the spell got through, he would find his strength slipping away. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Despite the obvious pain she was in, the witch seemed far from willing to admit defeat. The banshee she summoned was a hideous creature, a vile construct of evil magics. Its scream ripped through the air, washing over him in cold waves of nauseating sound. He quickly covered his ears, yet the sound rang through his mind, bringing about a slight disorientation.
"Y-You foul abomination! Begone!"
He wasn't sure if it had served the witch's purpose, or the force of his authoritative tone willed it away, but the disgusting creature soon vanished afterwards. Sighing with relief, Aubus lowered his hands... only to be met with a spell from the witch that was much, much worse. The smell of rot and decay pervaded him as the dark cloud of energy surrounded it. Aubus' eyes went wide, breaking from his indifference, hands clawing at his throat as it began to suffocate him. If he didn't do something soon, he would find himself incapacitated.
With a snap of his fingers, a glass vial of clear liquid appeared. Struggling to fight the encroaching illness, his movements sluggish, Aubus uncorked the vial and quickly took a long sip of the elixir. He immediately felt better as its healing properties went into effect, counteracting whatever vile sorcery had begun to take hold. Not all of the effects, but enough for him to regain a measure of his composure. Though he felt weaker now, as if his life energy had been sapped away.
"That is the foulest magic I've ever encountered," he said, tucking the small vial into his waistband. Something told him he would need it again. "You truly are a despicable creature, witch. And I'll end you here."
His hands began to glow with purple ki. Four energy constructs appeared, forming and taking shape until they resembled large hands, each the size of Aubus himself.
"Xeno's Will: God's Judgement!"
Aubus waved a hand as if conducting an orchestra, thrusting it at the witch. One of the four hands formed a large fist, plummeting toward the ground with the aim to crush her!

When faced with a command from an actual god, the spirit stopped to hesitate. Softly sobbing, she vanished with the same flames that had summoned her. The summoner, meanwhile, scoffed at the display. So a simple ghost couldn’t handle him... Hmph, no matter. The fiend had already served its purpose. It was only a matter of time before the curse brought the god to his knees. Or so she thought. Much to her surprise, he was still drawing breath, seeming almost unaffected. Almost. A mere mortal would’ve been coughing their bloody insides out right about now. Was this what they called divine protection? Or was it something else...?
Pushing the thought aside, Lilith lifted her wand in front of the oncoming projectile. "Shatter." The moment the large fist reached her, a spike of malign magic shot forth, splintering the construct into countless pieces. As the attack faded, the young lady nonchalantly brushed her hair. "Save your droll speeches for someone who cares." The foe had gotten the drop on her previously, but now she was prepared for his trickery. "As a witch, defying gods is practically my job." Though this was the first time she did so rather directly.
"Speaking of which..."
The witch waved her wand and the snowflake was replaced by a pitch-black orb. "Fall into to the black sea, sink and suffocate..." Another incantation drifted in the wind. "True Dark." On the command a blob of darkness manifested right behind the Kai. Resembling a menacing jaw dripping with inky shadows, it swallowed him whole. Even if he did break free, he would find the black substance clinging to him like sticky tar. And if that got into his eyes... Well. Certainly not the most pleasant experience.
Lilith then aimed her hand at the foe and focused intently. A blue glow painted over her red eyes. Some spells didn't need lengthy incantations. "Soul Siphon." She clenched her fingers and there was a disruption in the air, a faintly visible vortex forming between them. The darkness that enveloped him was sudden.
One moment he was watching the witch prepare her next assault after effortlessly shattering one of his constructs. And the next, the world around him was replaced with swirling, dripping shadows the color of ink. It was an unnatural darkness—thick, pliant and heavy. It clung to his hair, his eyes, his robes as panic surged inside of him, finally breaking his cool facade of indifference. It threatened to swallow him whole, cast him headlong into utter despair and darkness.
He would not allow it!
Aubus pushed out with his godly ki, dispelling and nearly disintegrating the gooey substance with his aura. Though it was mostly gone, it still clung to his clothes and hair, and his vision was compromised. He could see only shapes and blurs, and though the healing elixir in his bloodstream struggled to fight the toxic substance, it would be a while before he could properly see again.
Something else was happening. Similar to before yet far more potent, he felt his life force being drained from his body yet again. Aubus grasped at the air feebly, as if trying to keep his soul from leaking out, but to no avail. Try as he might to resist, he felt weaker, less than—as if a portion of his very life essence had been sapped away. Still, he struggled against it, another shock wave of his godly aura emanating from his body to guard against the unseen assault as best he could. When that failed, he flickered out of strange energy, appearing a good twenty or so feet away. Instantly, he felt better.
Sensing her ki, Aubus scowled in her direction. "Again and again, you thwart me with such disgusting sorcery! There is no hope for the likes of you!"
Hands glowing once more, he thrust his arms forward, sending two of the large hands surging forward toward her, one on either side of where she stood. Aubus slapped his palms together, and the massive constructs followed mimicked his movements, looking to crush her between their palms!

Despite the god’s struggling, the witch could feel her magic taking hold. Energy flowed into her, such an invigorating sensation caressing her soul. Even divine power had its limits. Though it was cut off much too soon... Oh well. She rolled her eyes at the hollow insults, not that the blinded foe could see her do so, but hopefully her tone would get the message across. "I see your lips moving... Yet all I hear is a dog barking." Mocking her magical talent was like a thorn digging into her nerve, but she clung to her composure. She refused to give him the joy of making her angr...ier.
As the predictable retaliation came, the young lady was ready. "Witch Step." Her body blurred with the dark energies, moving several paces in a single step. The constructs couldn’t keep up with the sudden change in speed, clashing against each other instead. In a heartbeat, she closed the distance, her less-than-amused voice now chiming from right behind the Kai. "So you just shout and toss your energy around? How quaint." He was wide open. Afflicted. Helpless. Now was the perfect chance to bring her fiery wrath upon him, to finish him off before he regained his vision. ...Or she could take her time slowly strangling the life out of him. Now there was a delightful idea.
Lilith waved the wand with another incantation, her foul power gathering around her body like creeping tendrils. "I call forth the rage of elements..." The inky orb at the tip of the wand shifted, splitting in two and assuming new forms. A brown stone became a core between the prongs and streaks of water circled around it. Together they formed something new. "Punishment Hex." Two green bolts of magic surged at the Kai, lashing out like a pair of angry snakes. If either one hit, he would find thorny vines rapidly growing around his body. Moving as if they had a mind of their own, the plants carried the malicious intent to tie his limbs and twist him into a painful, and shameful, position. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. He did not need to see the witch to sense her malevolent presence. His vision was slowly beginning to clear, the elixir fulfilling the purpose for which it had been summoned, yet it was not working well enough. His vision was partially restored, yet not enough that Aubus could yet fully trust his eyes again.
Hearing her voice behind him, he felt more than saw her next attack coming. Spiking his ki to enhance his speed, Aubus flickered out of the path of the first attack. Though, the second set of thorny vines managed to hone in on him. It grasped at his leg, winding itself up his limb as if it possessed a mind of its own. Much like all the other techniques the witch used, it seemed to possess some detrimental effect. The natural energies that flowed through Aubus' body felt stunted, the regenerative properties slowed to a crawl.
Directing his hand, Aubus swept his final construct down in a chopping motion. It served to severe the vines and shield him briefly from the witch's view. Unwinding the vines, Aubus gasped at the pain lancing through his leg. He was beginning to feel the wear of this battle weighing on him.
The time for holding back was over.
Sensing her ki, Aubus raised his hands and thrust them in her direction. He would offer no more words. If she would not respect his divinity and repent of her crimes willingly, she would be forced into repentance.
"Absence of God."
Colorless ki shot forth from the Kai's hands. It swirled and rippled through the air, surrounding the witch in a massive cloud. Aubus gripped his hands in a crushing manner, as if snuffing out the life of the decadent mortal before him.
"Begone."
An explosion would rock the area, by far the largest and most powerful as the ki ignited in a brilliant flash of light and heat, the resulting energy rocketing skyward. He could only hope the witch would perish in the blast!

For some reason, the witch made no move to dodge. Rather, she spent her last second before the blast to... scoff. "Hmph, know your place." The massive explosion shook the sky and the shockwave left the trees trembling. For mortals such display of godly might would’ve have been awe-inspiring. Or outright terrifying. But... When the dust settled... The slender silhouette emerged unscathed once again. Sinister sorcery surrounded her like a violet shroud, far stronger than it had been moments earlier. "All that boasting and blustering, yet that was the best you could manage?" She brushed her wind-blown hair behind her ear with a tired sigh. "How disappointing." It may have seemed that her power had suddenly skyrocketed, while in truth she had simply stopped holding back.
Lilith lifted a finger, a motion to preemptively silence whatever protests or gasps of disbelief, if any, the Kai may have had. As entertaining it was to watch the so-called god squirm, she had more important matters vying for her attention. Such as continuing her research. And restoring her home... Her glare narrowed and words grew colder. "You shall die as you lived... Insipid and ignorant." She crossed her arms over her chest, then spread them in a swift, almost theatrical motion. "Negative Field." The air suffered a strange distortion, like a dark bubble suddenly pulsing outwards. It seemed like the colors got inverted, followed by a sickening feeling that twisted one’s stomach. There was no dodging it. The foe could only endure and hope his eyes didn’t lose their light again.
Maintaining the merciless momentum, the wicked woman leveled her wand at the foe as well. "I call forth the the rage of elements..." On the command, the elemental magic took yet another form. The water flared into a flame, heating the rock until glowing cracks spread along its surface. "Molten Hex." Again she fired two bolts, but these were white hot. Like a shotgun blast of superheated stone, the spell was specifically meant to leave the Kai scorched and bleeding. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Molten rock pelted the Shinjin with extreme prejudice.
It was a strange mixture of pain and euphoria.
The resulting explosion rocked the area, light and heat slowly fading as the energy dispersed in concussive waves of force that bent the trees of the forest, tearing their very roots from where they were deeply embedded in the soil and leveling a great deal of the forest itself.
As the light faded and the debris, which had plumed into the air, began to settle, a lone small figure could be seen floating idly in the air. His hair was disheveled, his clothing ripped to tatters exposing pale skin seared and burned from the assault.
Aubus drifted in the aftermath of the blast, paralyzed from pain and overwhelmed with the situation at hand. His interference had proved far more destructive than the battle itself, and through sluggish thoughts, Aubus realized he had broken the promise he made to the villagers to rid them of such great evil.
How could I lose... a Shinjin, a god among mortals? How could... justice not prevail?
His body was battered and bruised, but it fared much better than his pride. Aubus had always been taught, no matter what great evil might come, that good would prevail in the end. He believed himself a practitioner of that ideal, a divine being who would guide the fate of mortals by his very hand. And yet, confronted with ultimate evil, he had failed.
A soft white glow enveloped him then, his very divinity beginning to heal the scars and wounds he sustained in the battle. Slowly, Aubus turned in mid-air and righted himself. He glared with one good eye, the other swollen shut and bruised. A bit of purple blood dribbled from the corner of his lips. Though his divinity would keep him alive, he could not heal and continue to fight.
As if he could. Aubus knew he was done. And he would not risk death—not here, not now.
Letting every ounce of his anger, confusion and rigid determination to destroy the witch fuel the vicious glare he leveled at her, Aubus turned and blasted away, letting his aura power his flight as he escaped from the scene of their battle.
This was one battle that would change him forever.
