One of the more fascinating races in the universe were by far the Frost Demons. Or would that be Arcosians? ...Changelings? Why was it that people could never agree on these things? Well, name confusion aside, they truly were a fascinating race. The ability to change their bodily structure at whim, not through magic but pure biology, was a well-known legend among certain circles. And a certain young witch was most eager to investigate the details of this legend. She had done her homework on them and their, hm, colorful history. All that remained was actually meeting a live specimen. Far easier said than done for an Earthling, honestly.
But oftentimes fate worked in mysterious ways.
Truth to be told, Lilith was quite surprised that the First Galactic Empire had responded to her request at all. She had sent their representatives a message through magical channels, a respectful and utmost formal request for audience with none other than the Emperor himself. Why should she, the strongest witch on earth and the heir of a noble family, bother dealing with mere servants, secretaries or politicians after all? Not that she had quite worded it like so... Rather, she had expressed her honest interest in offering her magical expertise for the Empire. In exchange, she only asked for a chance to meet the Emperor face to face, as well as freedom to study certain resources only the Empire had readily at its disposal. A fair trade, no? She thought so at least.
So here the refined woman was, in a spaceship and on her way to planet Mitra. She had been picked up by what she considered the bare minimum escort for someone of her status. Then again, she had always disliked crowds, so perhaps this quaintly compact carriage would do. Just this once. For the entire trip she had remained seated and silent, eyes closed in deep meditation. It was only when one of the armored escorts dared to address her directly that the crimson eyes flickered open again. She was informed, rather informally, that it would be few more minutes until they arrived. And they weren鈥檛 sure if the Emperor was ready to receive visitors right on arrival. Oh well. When it came to achieving her goals, she was an incredibly patient woman. Having waited years for a this rare opportunity, she could stand to wait a little longer...

Emperor of the Galaxy Another day, another odd visitor seeking a personal meeting with the Emperor of the Galaxy. This time, it was an Earthling witch, going by the name of Lilith Nevermore, who relayed a polite and official request to meet Polaris face to face and gain access to some specific resources the Empire had in its disposal as a trade for offering her services. A witch. A magician. When someone with such an invaluable practically offers to join your cause, how could you refuse? Though Polaris was never proficient in magic nor met more than a couple magicians during his life, it was a field which had interested him since his early days in the Galactic Patrol. A skill as powerful and versatile, perhaps even more so, than ki, and yet so distinct from it. The history books taught about powerful magicians such as Babidi or Fortuneteller Baba, who manages to shape the flow of history with their magical powers despite being physically frail and untrained, while, in more modern days, the reports from the Patrol-Frieza War, Saiyan War and Imperial-Saiyan War constantly show the effectiveness of magic users on the battlefield. Not long after the establishment of the First Galactic Empire and the elevation of the Ultramarines into an official elite force, the 11th Ultramarine Division was designated as a specialized unit for magic-wielders, while most other divisions have a dozen or two magicians as healers and support users - the results of this reform are positive. As such, Polaris swiftly accepted Lilith's offer for a meeting, and not long after the Imperial Patrol escorted the young Earthling witch to the meeting hall of the Emperor's palace in Mitra, the Frost Demon stepped out from one of the doors, his hands crossed behind his back and his face carrying a stern, serious expression. "Lilith Nevermore, I assume?" Polaris spoke, asking for clarification. You have to wonder, though - what was it that pressed this witch to ask to meet the Emperor himself? Something urgent, or just morbid curiosity? Or, who knows, maybe she is placing a curse on him as they speak... Defensive Phase

As the ship landed, the young witch was escorted through long hallways to a grand meeting hall of sorts. For the meeting she had picked her finest midnight blue dress. A lingering charm spell twinkled on the silken surface, resembling tiny stars shining in the endless space. The wand hung from a red sash on her hip, clearly visible as a proud symbol of her heritage. The mauve hair had been brushed until not a single strand dared to stray aside. Light touches of dark makeup lined her crimson gaze, giving lovely contrast against the ghostly pale skin. Only the very best for such an important occasion. First impressions mattered.
Speaking of which...
The doors opened to reveal a Frost Demon of stern stature. He carried himself with a very certain air. White, blue and black... No doubt about it. This had to be... Lilith鈥檚 line of thought was interrupted by the rather direct question. There... should have been one more word in there somewhere. Still, she she nodded and chimed oh so sweetly. "Indeed, your highness. I am Lady Lilith Nevermore, the heir of the Nevermore witch clan." Though the word insistently stood out in her tone. She pinched the sides of skirt and dipped deep into a formal curtsy, a motion trained to be flawless. "It鈥檚 an honor to finally meet you, Lord Polaris." Manners first and foremost.
After a suitable pause, the lady rose up again. "Now then..." She clasped her hands together and offered a charming, disarming smile. "I鈥檓 hoping the messengers have properly conveyed the main points of my request." It was bothersome to wear the expression, but she would suffer through it. "For you see, I am a huge admirer of your race and you especially, your highness. So I believe this could be the beginning of a beneficial relationship." Gleaming in the light, her crimson gaze studied the alien carefully, from the dome of his head to the tip of his tail. "And I would much rather offer certain benefits directly to you than any of your subordinates." ...Magic. She was talking about magic.

Emperor of the Galaxy Oh, right, how could Polaris have been so rude. Lady Lilith Nevermore, heir of the Nevermore witch clan, as if this gave her enough of a status to talk back to the Emperor like that. Polaris was refined enough to not show it, keeping up the veil of politeness as he responded to Lilith's curtsy with a nod, but in his mind, he was rolling his eyes. After that brief procedure, the witch explained the reasoning behind her wish to meet the Emperor face to face. She wanted to offer her services and magical ability not to the Imperial Army or to the Ultramarine Organization, but to the Emperor personally. Why? Well, apparently, she greatly admires Polaris's species and especially him. Inviting a female admirer for personal service and certain benefits? If you conveyed that to a spectator, they might assume something radically different. "Interesting." the Frost Demon spoke, cracking a slight smirk. "I might need you to be a little specific, however. I know that you, Lady Nevermore, much like the rest of your clan, are proficient in magic - but I'm also aware that magic is such a wide field that its users need to heavily specialize." Here's an idea that just popped into his mind. "A showcase wouldn't go amiss, milady." Defensive Phase

It was amazing what power a single word could carry. For a moment there, Lilith鈥檚 smile was just a touch more genuine. Of course for someone of her illustrious status such titles were the bare minimum, but she was simply happy that she didn鈥檛 need to repeat herself. Furthermore, the Emperor proved himself to be an educated and discerning individual. She was quick to nod, her pleased tone chiming like a silver bell. "Ah, what a wonderful suggestion, your highness. And if you don鈥檛 mind me echoing the thought, I wouldn鈥檛 mind witnessing your legendary power first hand either." That was partly why she was here after all.
Considering the best approach, the wicked woman took her wand and traced her fingers along the metal. "Seeing as you are clearly familiar with my kind, I shall skip the unnecessary details." She tucked some flowing strands of hair behind her ear with an air of unwavering confidence. ...If not outright smugness. "What you should know, however, is that my talents are vast and varied. I am not limited to a single field of specialization. Rather, I... assimilate every type of magic I encounter." Well, it wasn鈥檛 boasting if everything she said was absolutely correct. Otherwise she wouldn鈥檛 be standing here. The Emperor didn鈥檛 waste his time valuable with nobodies, she should hope. "With that said, I am rather fond of casting curses. Please observe..." He had asked for a showcase after all...
And a showcase he would certainly get.
Taking a deep breath, the young witch gathered her utmost focus. The incantation echoed in the grand hall. "Suffer the pains of conquest, famine and pestilence as your body withers away..." She aimed her hand at the Emperor and a baleful glow engulfed her clenching fingers. "Black Death." A massive blast of sickly colored haze erupted from the floor, heavy with the stench of sickness and decay. Like a set of ghastly jaws it swallowed the alien whole before slowly fading away. Some would鈥檝e called it ill-advised, suicidal even, to cast a curse upon the Emperor of Galaxy. Lilith, however, considered it far more foolish to show off cheap cantrips and subsequently fail to impress. She was here to make a lasting impression.

Emperor of the Galaxy Lady Nevermore, despite covering it with a veil of formality and arrogance, appeared excited to show off her abilities to the Emmperor, first by advertising herself as being far more versatile than most witches and then by opening up with a curse sent towards her future employer. Might not be the best tactic for getting a job, but hey, it works. Named "Black Death", the spell did exactly what you would imagine a spell with such a ghastly name to do - inflict a terrible curse upon its target, in this case, an unsuspecting Polaris, surrounding him with a sickly colored haze and a stench which could force an average person to throw themselves off the nearest bridge. Immediately after the haze subsided, the Emperor fell on his knee, breathing heavily, his face carrying a pained expression. The line of Ultramarines watching this fight begin were immediately infliicted with a curse of their own - concern. One of the troopers stepped forward, about to pull his blaster and fire it at Lady Nevermore for attempting to poison the Emperor, but he was stopped by Polaris suddenly raising a hand in his direction. The Frost Demon slowly stood up - still weakened and strained, but far from as pained as he was a minute ago. "Lady Nevermore, you said you are interested in Frost Demons, correct?" Polaris muttered, still wincing, but now cracking a slight smirk. "Well, milady, it appears that your thirst for knowledge has yet to be satisfied, because it appears you have missed an important quirk of our species - our endurance. Indeed, this curse is powerful enough to hospitalize an average person for weeks... but Frost Demons can survive an exploding planet and floating across space for months after, so count us all as well above average in this category. Who could forget the ancient Lord Frieza's feat of surviving the destruction of Namek and floating in its ruins for months? Certainly not Polaris. Though, he was bluffing a bit in this case - he wasn't a mutant, unlike the Cold clan and many other famous Frost Demons, so his endurance might not be as great, but everything else rang true. "You said you wouldn't mind witnessing my legendary power, correct, Lady Nevermore?" the Emperor muttered, clenching his right fist. "Fine by me. If you believe you can endure it..." Suddenly, the Frost Demon's powerful, fiery purple aura burst to life, instantly releasing a shockwave that spread across the room, followed by a wide gust of wind. The sheer force of the aura alone was enough to upset tables and chairs, rip at the precious wallpaper of the room and blow away the nearest Ultramarine soldiers. If Lilith can endure the aura, then maybe he can move to a slightly higher level. For example, a punch. No, that might be too far... (471 words) Defensive Phase

Brief surprise broke through the wicked woman鈥檚 mask. She could only stare wide-eyed when the Emperor worked through the pain. That... would鈥檝e had most creatures vomiting their insides out right about now... However, cold logic quickly kicked in, letting her regain her composure. No, she shouldn鈥檛 have been surprised at all. This much was only expected from the man holding such prestigious fame. She was familiar with the tales, of course, but still... To see it in person... How very intriguing.
When the first display of strength came, Lilith was quite prepared. "Mist Form." Her body seemed to come apart at its imaginary seams, scattering into dark mist. The force of the aura lashed straight through her, tearing her hazy form apart. Once the assault ended, however, the mist converged and the witch reformed. She had endured the attack with barely a single scratch on her fine robes. ...Well, endure was bit of a misleading word. It was more that she bypassed the shockwave. Witches had their ways.
Finding that sweet smile again, the young witch was quick to voice her praise. "Most impressive, your highness. To think you can display such strength without lifting a finger. It鈥檚 quite humbling honestly." In the same breath her tone took something of a sly edge though. "But... While I may look like a beautiful and delicate flower, I assure you there is no need to be so careful." She reached into her long sleeve and pulled out a glimmering crystal orb. Smoke seemed to swirl within as she gazed into it. "After all, this isn鈥檛 even a fraction of what you can do, is it? Ah, no, I can clearly see it isn鈥檛..." And she did mean the cryptic comment in the literal sense.
With the precautionary glimpse taken, Lilith continued her showcase. "Aside from curses and divination, I also have a number of infernal fiends at my disposal." She flicked the wand downwards, uttering another incantation. "From Hell鈥檚 heart I summon thee..." Infernal energies burned a five-pronged symbol onto the floor. "Come forth, mist stalking killer, Jack the Ripper." In a flash of flames, a lanky silhouette appeared before the witch. The creature resembled a sharp-dressed gentleman from a different era, top hat and all. Yet his exact appearance evaded understanding, as if he was constantly covered in drifting mist. Glowing pinprick eyes were accompanied by a crescent grin too wide for his mouth.
Much like one would present a pet, the wicked woman proudly patted the ghastly creature. "All of my servants are fearless, obedient and essentially immortal. Killing them merely sends them home." Stepping aside, she swept her hand towards the Emperor. "Please, take a closer look." And when she said that, yes, she meant exactly what one might expect. "Jack... Attack." In a blur of misty motion, the monstrous murderer closed the distance. An unnaturally sharp blade gleamed in his grasp as he aimed a single slash at the alien. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Emperor of the Galaxy Lady Nevermore, as it turns out, had a counter to enemies trying to take advantage of her frailty - that is, by taking on a mist form and avoiding the burst of aura aimed at her, as well as everything in sight. Clever. Somewhat reminiscent of how Yardrats and people who learn from them use Instant Transmission to dodge incoming attacks without actually moving. At least Polaris had the pleasure to know that Lady Nevermore was not going to get one shotted by the first person she meets on the battlefield. Unlike some people ( Tora). After that brief clash, the Earthling witch showed off an another ability of hers - this time, summoning a minion made of mist, resembling a gentleman wielding a blade, who promptly lunged forward without an ounce of hesitation and sent his weapon forward in an attempt to slash the Emperor. Interesting. Very interesting. Polaris raised his thumb and index finger, catching the incoming blade of mist with them both. The blade of the weapon slightly cut into his fingers, but it was far from threatening. "Immortal, fearless and obedient, you say?" Polaris muttered, clenching his left fist and pouring a little bit of his ki into it. "I suppose this means you're practically begging me to eliminate it without hesitation." Polaris suddenly threw a punch towards the minion's chest, the force of the blow whipping up a torrent of air, its aim to pierce through the so-called "Jack the Ripper" and then continue on by targeting Lady Nevermore herself. While the Emperor effortlessly blocked the blade, Lilith glanced into her crystal ball and quirked a brow. She took a strategic step to the side. Hm, well, maybe two more, just in case. Not a moment too late to avoid the blast of pressure that tore through the room. The infernal creature hit the wall with a wet splat, dispersing into fine mist on impact. Yet the summoner only smiled smugly, her voice filled with approval. "I expected nothing less of you, your highness." She lovingly caressed the surface of her glimmering orb and smiled mysteriously. "In fact, this outcome was precisely what I expected." Yes, exactly as she had foreseen. Not that it took divination to see a mere demon was no match for this man.
The young lady carried on with her sales speech. "Now, it isn鈥檛 my preference to fight directly..." Her smile sharpened. She wasn鈥檛 done yet, not quite. "But rest assured, I am far from helpless on the field." While she had no intention to reveal all of her talents, it never hurt to show that she was perfectly capable without servants to back her up, just like him. "You see, I have studied these... so-called martial artists..." Despite her best attempt, she couldn鈥檛 quite hide her distaste for those glorified monkeys who mucked about with their fists. "...and assimilated something rather useful for a caster." Still, even fools could prove useful in their methods.
Holstering the wand for now, Lilith flexed her fingers. Glimmering traces of mana pooled within her palm. "In short, I am able to cast certain spells without needing lengthy incantations. Please allow me to demonstrate..." She calmly lifted her hand towards Polaris. Blue glow painted over her red eyes and engulfed her splayed fingers. "Soul Siphon." There was a disruption in the air, like a faint vortex swirling. It tried to latch onto the alien and rip his very soul out his chest. If his fortitude faltered, or he remained within her gaze, he might have found his strength slipping away.
Regardless of whether the witch managed to pull any energy out of the Emperor, she then crossed her arms over her chest and suddenly swept them outwards. "Negative Field." A dark, translucent sphere expanded rapidly, pushing through the entire room. For a brief moment as it passed, it seemed like the colors were inverted. Roughly a heartbeat later, a cold, twisted sensation grasped everyone鈥檚 insides, like shards of ice forming within their heart and lungs. The stinging pain would鈥檝e soon had a lesser soldier breathless on the ground. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Polaris Aura Burst = 2 direct dmg Attack 1: Lilith 85 Def vs Polaris 63 = Miss! Emperor of the Galaxy Lady Nevermore still had plenty of tricks up her sleeve, it seems. Now that her minion of mist had been taken down, the witch decided that it was about time for her to enter the fray personally and show all that she has been able to gather from her experience and studies of martial artists, activating two spells one after the other. Soul Siphon and Negative Field. In short, it left Polaris feeling somewhat dizzy from having a bit of his ki drained, and the room's colors being inverted for a second before all the Ultramarines lined up by the wall collapsed clutching their chests and the Emperor winced from a sudden surge of pain. As if some shards of ice had formed within his chest. Interesting... a way to swiftly immobilize your opponent. But it's not lethal to someone of higher caliber, even if Lilith didn't seem to be aware of this. Indeed, this seems to be the case with most of her spells - effective against random mooks, a mild annoyance at best against someone powerful enough to take on a Super Saiyan. That's not to say that her skills weren't worth recruiting for, they definitely were... but it's nothing to brag about in this day and age, either. And intimidating people through telling them the harsh truth was a really good way to relieve one's stress after getting a sudden chest ache. So why not? "I imagine your spells have a lot of theoretics behind them, Lady Nevermore - perhaps even years of work and study, correct?" Polaris spoke, straightening a little and forming a smirk. "Well, to not sound to for a lovely soul such as yours... in this day and age, with such powers on the Galactic scene, they might as well be the work of a novice." The Frost Demon, in preparation for what was about to happen, clenched his right fist and started gathering ki within it, letting it take upon a faint glow. "I'm sure you're well aware that I am not using my full power against you, Lady Nevermore. In fact, I rarely battle in this weak, base form. And yet, you seem to be not doing too well against it, are you? The magic that was supposed to impress me has so far had more impact on the soldiers watching the fight than on the person you're supposed to attack. What would you do if the other side then decides to, I don't know, do..." Suddenly, without warning, Polaris charged forward, moving across the room at hypersonic speeds with his right fist cocked back, before tossing the attack forward as a punch towards the Lady's cheek. He didn't put enough power in that attack to kill the witch, hopefully... but surely, if it were to land, it would be enough to severely daze her, or maybe even knock her out. "...this?" It was often said that fear is the mind-killer... Slowing every action, weighing down every thought. ...Well, at least that鈥檚 what Lilith would later blame for her slow reaction. Her eyes barely had the time to widen when the Frost Demon vanished, with no hope of ever tracking his movements. "Witch St-" Even the quickest defensive incantation in her arsenal was cut short on her lips. The wand slipped from her grip with a hollow clatter. She was easily light and frail enough to get launched back by the attack, all the way across the room. Something cracked with the impact. Her limp body left a witch-shaped dent while a spider web of cracks appeared on the wall.
With the faintest thud, hardly even audible, the young lady fell to the floor. Crimson dripped past her lips. Silent seconds crept by... Until she suddenly stirred. Slowly she rose from the ground, yanked onto her feet by invisible forces, reminiscent of a marionette with broken strings. A lot of actual things were broken too, but she didn鈥檛 want to think about them. It was purely through magical trickery alone that she was even conscious anymore. Yet her voice, drifting across the hall, somehow still managed to retain its prideful tone. "I knew you鈥檇 do that..." Though admittedly her unfocused gaze and shallow breathing might have made it difficult to believe.
Struggling to even breathe normally, Lilith dusted her dress with her still working hand. "To answer your question, your highness..." A wasted effort, really, but it gave her something else to think about while choosing her words. "I would do the same thing I have done all these years..." She straightened her back and idly brushed her scrambled hair into order. "Survive and improve." Jaded to the core, she didn鈥檛 fear pain nor death. Not anymore... Besides, the fact that she was still drawing breath against such overwhelming power at all told her plenty enough. Frost Demons... truly were worth studying. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Emperor of the Galaxy Survive and improve. Two words Polaris didn't shy away from adapting to his own life. Etohn, Taro and many others he had surpassed through sheer grit and efford would nod their heads and agree. One of them from the Other World. Not sure where the other one from. And this witch certainly took the "survive" part right. Limping and standing as if she was a marionette, she did not abandon her cocky demeanor even after having her face decked by the most powerful Frost Demon in history. That's an another admirable quality about Lady Nevermore, then - even in the face of the highest adversity, she stuck to her guts and continued on. For a member of the Ultramarines, stubborness was about as good of an ability as you can have. Useful in any situation. Even if Lady Nevermore was set to lose this fight, Polaris had already made his mind on whether he was going to accept her offer of services. But for now, he needed to finish this fight first. And respond to her 'survive and improve' comment, too. "That's great, miss," Polaris spoke, his right hand forming a finger-gun as he did so. "Improve against this." The Frost Demon suddenly aimed the finger-gun forward and fired off a bolt of energy, aimed at Lilith's head, from his index finger. (222 words) Defensive Phase

The witch had her reasons for not casting spells anymore. She was conserving her strength, just in case her expectations turned out inaccurate. Truth to be told, despite the pain hammering her mind, she was confident she could avoid one more strike and flee. If the worst came to worst. She hoped it wouldn鈥檛 though. Losing this opportunity would鈥檝e hurt far more than losing some teeth did. Those could be restored anyway. Still... It never hurt to be prepared... Too bad preparations meant absolutely nothing before overwhelming strength.
Of course, Lilith had a clever quip for the occasion, something to witty to fling back at Lord Polaris for his comment. Unfortunately she didn鈥檛 have time to open her mouth again. So in a flash of energy, the retort died on her lips. It was a small wonder the energy didn鈥檛 pierce her skull. Or maybe the Frost Demon was just that talented at holding back. Either way, the shot snapped against the woman鈥檚 forehead and instantly the last glimmer of consciousness vanished from her eyes. She fell backwards, collapsing against the cold floor. With the mask of pride gone, the seriousness of her injuries was finally plain to see. A line of red painted the corner of her mouth and her chest moved with only the faintest breaths. Lights out.
Goodnight. BATTLE TRACKER DEFENSE PHASE. Polaris Attack 1: Lilith 70 Def vs Polaris 120 = Hit! Attack 2: Lilith 70 Def vs Polaris 73 = Hit! Attack 3: Lilith 70 Def vs Polaris 146 = Hit! Crit! Total damage dealt = Scary amount! >_>

Emperor of the Galaxy
Polaris did his best to hold himself from laughing his heart out after seeing the way Lady Nevermore's resistance ended. That has to be the most humiliating way to go out, surely. One moment, you stand up and declare that your trick is to survive, endure and adapt, and the other moment he pops a headshot and she collapses unceremoniously, as if all that talk about surviving had been nothing but hot air.
Thankfully, Lady Nevermore was not dead - a ki signature, however faint, could be felt from her barely conscious body. That's good news. A dead witch was as good as... well, dead. And it would be a mess to clean out a dead body from his palace, too... It would have been a waste of a battle, too. Testing a new recruit to see whether they will be useful as one of Polaris's subordinates, and they just end up dead. Now that's humiliation.
Polaris turned his head towards one of the Ultramarines, who were still exhausted after having been afflicted by plenty of Lady Nevermore's area of effect spells, and spoke:
"Pick her up and put her into a healing chamber. And don't you dare do anything to her on the way. I'll skin you alive for that."
The Ultramarine, though frightened by the sudden threat, nodded and hurried forward.
"And get someone who could patch up that hole, please!"
