Tournaments were a quirk of the distant past which had largely become out of fashion in Legume's time. Most people simply didn't have the time to visit tournaments or train hard enough to compete in them, and those who had the talent and will to improve their bodies to the maximum limit were either enrolled in the military or were professionals in some sort of sport and instead put their focus on sporting events rather than dedicated martial arts tournaments. After Legume got dropped in the past, however, he gained an entirely new appreciation for tournaments. Not the least because it was one of the few ways he could make money in a Galaxy where he was a complete stranger, as the only quality he brought with himself was his training and power level. That's the way how he managed to make enough money to buy himself food and even acquire a spaceship to traverse the whole Galaxy with. So how about one more? Held on Planet Arcose, the Nickel Tournament is an event with a long tradition, and acquired its name because the contestants, quite literally, fight for a giant, three ton nickel coin as the main prize. Sounds like a bizarre prize to be fighting for, doesn't it? Well, nickel is a fairly valuable metal. You could smelt and sell the coin for more than ten thousand zeni. And that's what Legume was gunning for. "And in this corner... we have the surprising new talent, Legume!" the voice of the mushroom-like announcer roared through the microphone. Carrying the ten foot long Vanity on his shoulder, the Saiyan stepped onto the square-shaped ring, his entrance marked with the hundreds of spectators staring at him and talking about who this person might be. Nobody had ever heard of the Saiyan before, and yet he was able to sweep through the qualifiers with such speed and power that most of his opponents could hardly see what's coming for them. "And in this corner, we have..." Defensive Phase

Tora loved tournaments. This, however, was unlike any tournament he had ever participated in. He had left Earth for the first time, coming to the alien planet of Arcose to participate in this tourney. Tora sensed quite a few distinct power levels and couldn't help but anticipate a good fight. In fact, as he entered the ring for this bizarre 'Nickel Tournament', he heard the announcer introduce him. "In this corner we have Tora no Seishin, all the way from Earth!" Tora grinned from ear to ear, waving to the cheering crowd of aliens. His showmanship was there, apparently. Turning to his foe, he eyed Legume up and down. The man had a giant sword. Perfect- he would need it to go up against Tora's secret weapon. As they signalled the start of the match, Tora began performing a few bizarre hand signs. His ki began to skyrocket as he did this, focusing on his newfound technique- a strange blue mist surrounded the fighter. Then it took form. A giant brilliantly white furred albino tiger stood in front of Tora. He wasted no time mounting the creature, deciding he should fight at full force from the start. With that, he commanded the old tiger to perform an attack that would rend the flow of ki in Legume's body; from there, Tora would leap from the head of the beast and unleash a flurry of ki-infused claw-like strikes towards the other warrior. "Sorry, but I can't afford to hold back!" He explained as he struck, hoping to end this quickly and come out victorious. Tora had yet to sense the depths of his opponents' strength. This was his first fight against a Saiyan after all. Not that he knew that. BATTLE TRACKER

Tora no Seishin, an Earthling martial artist, was his opponent. Interesting. Legume could theoretically claim that he was fighting one of his own here... but, then again, his genes were a mix of so many species, much like most other of the people he knew in his time, that talking about separate "species" was kind of a moot point there. Seeing how the warriors of this time stack up to the ones he is familiar with... is going to be interesting. Thankfully, Tora immediately went on an offensive, activating a some sort of transformation which summoned a massive white tiger as his steed and weapon in battle. A transformation, then? Or a technique... Should he respond with the same and activate a transformation of his own? As the first of the martial artist's attacks came, Legume figured that for now, the answer can be "no", as even in his base form, he was able to leap out of the giant tiger's claws and take care of the martial artist's own claw attacks by blocking and deflecting them with his weapon. You'd imagine that carrying the massive Vanity with him everywhere would lower his speed somewhat - but that simply wasn't the case at this power level. Even a weapon weighing a few tons was as light as a feather to him. "I sure hope so, Tora no Seishin!" Legume exclaimed back to Tora's declaration of not holding back, using the martial artist's full name for simple politeness. Alright, now how to deal with the giant tiger and the martial artist at once... Well, the first option which came to mind is disabling the tiger. Legume's eyes suddenly fired several eye beams, aiming for the giant's legs and specifically targeting the knees in an attempt to immobilize it. Immediately afterward, the Saiyan swung his massive weapon, creating several massive shockwaves and waves of air from the sheer force with which the blade pushed the air in front of it, aiming those at Tora himself to try to blow him away. As his strikes were blocked and deflected Tora couldn't help but feel satisfaction. This man had fallen right into his trap. Tora was confident he had this one backed into a corner. Legume would notice that even being in proximity to Tora's rending slashes would be damaging to him. Blocking wouldn't be enough. Even without a direct point of contact his foe would be wracked with damage, as was the key to his technique. Tora didn't have to land a blow to achieve a decisive victory. His fighting style had been developed beyond that. Tora intercepted the beams that Legume sent towards the elder tiger, dissipating them with a few precise slashes. He effectively neutralized the ki before it could damage his master. From there, Legume produced incredible shockwaves and unleashed them towards Tora. Tora grinned as he deftly evaded the attacks, unleashing a swift counterattack in the meanwhile. The old tiger pounced again, aiming to catch their shared opponent off guard just as Tora closed the gap between the pair. The youthful fighter unleashed a terrible series of ki infused strikes once more, hoping to put an end to this soon. Tora was tired of his losing streak. "You can do better than this! I feel a lot of power built up in you, just waiting to be unleashed! Push yourself!" BATTLE TRACKER

So Tora's fighting style was fairly similar to Legume's then - release attacks with significant after-effects which end up hitting the enemy even if he managed to avoid them. As the Saiyan warrior leapt away from the claw strikes, he could feel that the air gusts, air slashes and shockwaves of the techniques continued to strike at him afterwards. Legume generated a paper-thin energy shield right above his skin to compensate, but some of the damage managed to slash through regardless, forcing him to wince. No matter. Tora was about to feel the exact same. The damage from the air bursts and shockwaves which Vanity's swings produced were rushing right at him. It was right at this moment where the Earthling warrior suddenly called out to him, demanding that Legume stops fighting back and unleashed all of the strength he supposedly keeps hidden. Does he know that I am a Super Saiyan? It couldn't be, he must only be having a hunch. Why would he be, though? In this time period, Super Saiyans were extremely scarce. You could not expect any talented military-trained Saiyan to be able to transform. So what's up with that? "What gave you that idea?" the Saiyan exclaimed right back. Legume then placed his index and middle finger on his forehead, focusing on Tora's ki, and suddenly vanished, reappearing meters away from the Earthling martial artist and sending Vanity forward in a wide vertical swing. Tora didn't know his opponent was holding back. It was a sinking suspicion. From the way he fought and parried his strikes, to the way he endured through Tora's onslaught. The Tiger of Earth had deduced that Legume and him shared a similar method of fighting, albeit in completely different stylizations. The same shockwaves he had dodged somehow found him yet again- Tora focused his ki into his muscles to build up their durability. He would survive this. For now, at least. Tora was about to counterattack when Legume instantaneously dissappeared, phasing back into view hefting his giant sword around and swinging it towards Tora. He hardly managed to dodge it, cursing as it cut into the muscles of his right arm, injuring him. The martial artist cried out in pain as he backpedaled away from Legume. That had taken a lot out of Tora. He needed a moment to recuperate- that strike had been instantaneous. "I didn't know for sure until you just came at me like that- you're in a whole league above me, aren't you? You took one of my craftier moves head on. Respect. Legume was it? Let's make this good for the crowd!" he stated, phasing from view again. Another flurry of quick slashes would follow, Tora grunting in pain. His arm hurt. He would have to push himself further. He didn't have the stamina to fight at this level continuously. He suspected that Legume knew that, and intended to keep the pressure on. BATTLE TRACKER

So the Earthling just had a hunch. Huh. He just imagined that the person who was already significantly more powerful than him could possibly increase his power even more than that. Hunches are sometimes good to have, but Legume viewed them as too much like something uncivilized people do. Viewing the world through uneducated guesses and assumptions rather than logic and facts. Whatever. "You're not wrong." Legume responded to Tora's statement that he is in a whole another league, then raised his sword Vanity to start blocking and deflecting each of the swift and quick claw slashes heading his way. "I'd love to make this a spectacle for the crowd, indeed... but it's not really going to be possible if you're exhausted already, isn't it?" Indeed, the Saiyan could tell that Tora was not operating at his maximum capacity. The Earthling martial artist was grunting in pain and his arm was swollen, clearly wounded by his teleportation strike from earler. Which, if anything, is at least good for him, because this means that he will be able to finish this fight quickly. After deflecting an another claw slash, Legume suddenly sent his hand forward, using its middle and index fingr to poke Tora several times in various joints to try to immobilize him. Whether or nor he succeeded, the Saiyan warrior swung his weapon forward for a powerful vertical strike. Defensive Phase

Legume told Tora that he was right. The other fighter was in a different league then him. On top of that, Tora felt that he was slowing down. It didn't matter though. Something in Tora's gut told him this fight was about to end, one way or another. So, as Legume targetted his different pressure points- much in the way Tora did- the Tiger knew he only had one chance to prevent himself from being immobilized. With intense precision, he struck each point that Legume struck a millisecond after he did, reversing the effects of his attack as it was unleashed. Then, the Saiyan deflected his clawed slash, before he hefted his giant weapon around. Another crafty move would be Tora's only chance to harm the other fighter. He took the strike head on, catching the massive blade in between his hands. His injured arm he could now hardly move- it was through sheer perseverance and adrenaline that he managed to stop the strike. The kinetic energy from the strike wracked his body with pain and he felt a few bones in his hands crack. They didn't break- but, parts of them almost splintered from the impact. He growled, as he began striking the blade with his less damaged hand- suddenly, Legume would feel his own body wracked with the same pain that Tora's was, the energy from the attack being split between the pair. From there, Tora counterattacked with nearly the rest of his remaining stamina. This was a vulnerable moment, and he couldn't waste it. A few more clawed strikes targeted his foe; But a moment later, the elder tiger pounced, unexpectedly. Tora hoped the combined assault of the pair would be effective in taking the superior fighter unaware. Opportunity had presented itself to the youthful martial artist. BATTLE TRACKER

Well, if anything, Tora did not lack tenacity. Despite his body being mangled and bones quite literally breaking in front of Legume, the Earthling martial artist took the pressure point strike really well and responded with a sudden counterattack, transferring the pain of the Vanity strike into the Saiyan's body, forcing him to wince in response. The clawed attacks which followed, complete with the giant tiger leaping towards him, were somewhat easier for Legume to dispatch - using Vanity as a makeshift defense, the Saiyan blocked and deflected the incoming strikes, although he was sent sliding back across the ring from the impact. "Are you sure you want to continue this?" Legume suddenly spoke, straightening up, letting the tip of Vanity's blade smack to the ground, releasing a loud thump. "I'm never in the mood to fight a broken man, and you're going out of your way to break your body for just a simple fight." If Tora were to answer with yes (which is what Legume presumed would be coming from his mind, anyway), the Saiyan would sigh, place his index and middle fingers on his forehead and teleport right in front of the Eartling martial artist. Before he could release any attacks, however, Legume would suddenly take a deep breath, inhaling in Tora's aura and ambient ki to try to drain the last of his reserves, and only then release several swings with Vanity. Tora refused to give in. He made that obvious to Legume. And when Legume appeared in front of Tora, the adrenaline from the pain and excitement of the fight kept his reflexes fast. Even when his energy was sapped from him, he managed to avoid the arcing slashes from the other fighters' sword. He didn't have the strength to counterattack in a traditional way. “I should say the same to you...” he said, between ragged breaths. Tora caught the blade again, his body struggling under the weight of the blade. Once again Tora struck points on the blade, this time the sword echoing with the sound of his ki colliding with the blade. Most of the kinetic energy that had gathered up with Legume hefting that giant blade around returned to the other fighter, returning the damage that could've been dealt to the Tiger of Earth through his strange fighting style. It was against fighters like this that Tora excelled. He felt some of his stamina return to him. Pain still overwhelmed him. His arm barely functioned at this point- he doubted he would be able to heft it up again to guard over the course of this fight. Tora knew he wouldn't be capable of continuing this battle much longer. BATTLE TRACKER

Nope, Tora's simply going to ignore the fact that he is quite literally about to die in the middle of what should be a friendly tournament match between two martial artists. He didn't even consider giving up or scaling down his offensive, he merely continued on, sending shockwaves throughout Vanity to practically zap Legume through his weapon and send him blown back before he finally stopped on the tiled floor of the battlefield.
This battle was getting a little... problematic, and not just because Tora was going to simply die if the battle continues. Does this tournament not have referees which could stop the bout if it grows too violent? Apparently not...
"Well then..."
Vanity fell from Legume's grip, falling to the floor with a loud thud, while the Saiyan clenched his fist and ignited his aura, then closed his eyes. The brightly lit tournament ring suddenly began to dim down, all other sources of light suddenly overshadowed by Legume's building up aura, cracking with energy, speeding across the floor and picking up dust, tiles and pieces of rock all around it. Until finally, it exploded.
The hundreds of spectators, whose eyes had already been glued to the spectacle beforehand, all collectively gasped in awe. There was no denying it or trying to get away from it. All of them had just witnessed a Super Saiyan. The golden hair, fiery aura and power level which crushingly overwhelmed that of Tora's all spoke exactly that. Legume raised his hand, lifting his weapon back from the floor and into his grip with his telekinetic powers, then suddenly spoke:
"I give up."
He was not going to watch anyone be powderized to a pulp during what should be a tournament match.
Though he couldn't deny that the skill which Tora showcased during the match gave him some newfound respect for the Earthling, either.
