“So you’re telling me this is a portal to another dimension?”
Joshua
The sun was high on Venus today as the planet’s protector and many of his cohort were gathered in the top floor of Central Command. There had been some reports of a strange anomaly located out in the deserts near one of the listening posts, and Griffin had believed it was worthy of a meeting containing all of Joshua’s closest advisors. While he didn’t have any armies to command this planet was still his to protect however he saw fit, and and anomaly that had created this much disturbance was worth an emergency meeting.
Initial reviews of the anomaly had deemed it was some kind of energy construct, but further investigation showed it was emitting almost no ki and one of the planet’s more illustrious travelers had offered an explanation. According to him this was some kind of inter dimensional portal that could take you to ‘another world’. Supposedly many people sought one of these portals for their own possession, but being able to sustain one was incredibly expensive. The fact one had just appeared on this planet was an opportunity as well as a situation in need of addressing.
Griffin believed an expedition was needed inside the portal to learn whatever they could, and an inverted fortress should be constructed around the portal to ensure any invaders were dealt with swiftly and the planet was protected. While this made sense it also ignored the fact that anything powerful enough to create a portal like that was likely far stronger than any military detachment, and the fact nothing had come through yet was a pretty clear indicator this wasn’t the beginning of a massive sneak attack.
“No, not just another dimension, the Other World. It’s kinda like the afterlife but there's tons of living beings there too, mostly Kais but I think a few demons come from there too? I mean no one really knows, or at least no one in the military, which is why I kinda agree with the Colonel. An expedition is a great idea, we could find out tons about the other world and probably find whoever made that portal for a few answers.” Cassandra had been mostly quiet in this meeting so far but this made it pretty clear she wasn’t in favour of militarising the area around it, and Josh was pretty sure she just wanted to go through it.
“Alright, I’ve listened to what you’ve all had to say, but I’ll need a bit of time to make up my mind. There’s too much at steak to make a rash decision and-”
As he was speaking everyone in the room sensed the same thing at the same time. A power so massive it could be sensed across the entire planet, so intimidating that everyone was left speechless. There were a few seconds of stunned silence as everyone in the room had the same realisation that something had just come through that portal and the entire military of Earth probably wouldn’t be able to take it down. Still, Holmes was the first on his feet and immediately activated the warning sirens.
Alerts blared across the entire base and would be doing the same in bases all across the planet. The entire of Venus had moved into code red, mobilising in an instant as information filtered through to the outpost’s Senior NCOs and commanding officers on the situation, although most of them would probably be able to sense it anyway. Griffin followed Holmes’ example and began giving orders to the guardsmen by the door to the meeting room, following them down the stairs and continuing to shout orders to everyone he saw.
Cassandra and Josh turned to look at each other. The situation was clear, despite them both being far above the average human neither of them would have a chance at holding their own against this kind of power.
“You go. Get the generals and admirals ready. Whatever this is, it’s probably going to kill me, so you’ll be the new Protector when I’m gone. But hey, at least we’ll get to see the other world either way.” Josh said to his apprentice.
“You’re an ass you know,” she smiled, “I’ll get the planet ready for a fight. Try to loosen whoever it is up for me will ya?” And with that she was gone, flying out the sky hatch towards the officer’s mess where many of the planet’s highest ranking commanders were waiting. Josh paused for a second. If he died here, at least it’d be a pretty heroic end. Maybe they’d remember him fondly, the first protector of Venus and all, dying for his honour and duty. Oh well, guess he’d be able to see from that Other World everyone was on about.
He took off in the opposite direction to Cassandra, his energy spiraling rapidly from high to low as his body tried to figure out a way to win against an enemy more than three thousand times stronger than him. One hit would probably be enough to kill him. He was only a four minute flight from the portal at his speed, putting all he had into confronting whatever this was before it was too late.
As he soared above the expansive deserts he could sense the being wasn’t moving. Whatever it was remained completely still, while continuing to emit a power unlike anything Josh had ever seen. As he got nearer the power level reader on his visor began to go haywire, before eventually settling at about 250,000,000. Just as Josh had thought. Ridiculously fucking strong. Why do I always get the suicidal jobs he thought to himself.
When he neared the sight he calmed his nerves and steadied his energy. With his own power level holding at its standard 50,000 he could now see just how outmatched he was. He’d need 5,000 Joshuas to be able to match one of whatever the hell was waiting for him.
The human touched down just a couple hundred meters from the portal. Through the thick and sandy air it was hard to see what was ahead, especially with his visor and his energy sensing thrown out of whack by this immense power ahead. A sudden gust of wind that appeared from nowhere threw the dust and debris away, leaving a two hundred metre wide clearing. At the center of this clearing was the source of the wind. The figure.
From what Josh could see it looked almost human, but its skin wasn’t at all human coloured. He slowly slid Caliburn out of its scabbard, while walking at a steady pace closer to the figure.
“Oh good. I hoped you’d come alone.” It said, not even turning to face him.
“Who are you, and what do you want with this planet.” He responded, stopping dead in his tracks and reserving every ounce of ki in his body.
“Relax, put that sword away. You’re beginning to threaten me you know, and threatening isn’t very nice. Didn’t your father ever teach you that?”
Threaten him? Josh couldn’t even phase this being with all of his power if he tried let alone threaten him. And why was he mentioning his father?
“I never knew my father so no, he didn’t.”
“Ah.” The figure seemed to have come to a realisation. “That explains why you’re so weak.”
Josh simply grunted. What did his father have to do with any of this? And why would that affect his own power?
“Look just tell me what you want so we can get to the you fighting and me dying part of all this.” Josh was getting impatient. This just didn't add up. A powerful, stuck up being showed up on his planet seemingly for a chat? What was this all about.
“I want you to show me what you’re made of. So I can decide if you’re worth my time.” Now the figure turned, revealing to Josh its full figure. It had pale green green skin and spikey white hair, immediately giving it away as a Kai. It looked like any other Kai to Josh, but this one was far more powerful than those he’d faced in the past.
“Or would you rather I just blew up your planet instead?” With a single glance the Kai was able to send a small ruined structure nearby exploding into millions of fragments.
“Fine, you wanna see my power? Not like it’ll be sufficient, but whatever.” The human closed his eyes, gathering his ki in the center of his body. He let out a ferocious shout as his aura turned a crimson red and his power almost tripled. The ground around him cracked and a burst of energy shot out in all directions as he powered up.
“This is the override technique. It’s my maximum power.” No doubt Cassandra and a couple others on the planet were able to sense his power up. Not sure what they'd be thinking of right now. “Am I worth your time then?”
“Hm” The Kai simply said. Then suddenly he was behind Josh, and Josh felt a massive impact on his back, launching him straight into the portal and into the unknown.
Cassandra
“Do you sense that?” She said, turning to the commanders around her. The fleet admirals and low star generals looked confident, but she could sense the nervousness in their thoughts from the power they could all sense. Now they’d all sensed Josh powering up to, and it demonstrated to them all just how outmatched they were. Even Josh, using the Override technique, was no match for this thing.
The commanders weren’t idiots. They’d all sent their initial mobilisation orders as the entire planet mobilised to deal with whatever this threat was. Now she had them gathered, and with Josh off dealing with this being she was in charge of making sure none of these officers tried to out rank each other. Even those that were more senior still needed to act as though they were the same level, otherwise the planet would struggle to remain stable.
Suddenly the immense power by the portal moved. Not by much, but enough for Cassandra to notice. Then, less than a second later, Josh’s ki vanished. It didn’t just move, it completely disappeared. She couldn’t sense him at all. A few seconds later the far greater power did the same. She had no idea what just happened, but she now had to be the one to deal with it. At least she had all these soldiers that were ready to fight.
Joshua
So apparently he’d just traveled to the afterlife. This wasn’t exactly how Josh had figured he’d arrive at the Other World, kinda thought he’d go down in some legendary battle, but this worked too. Maybe now he was here he could escape and find some way to beat the power waiting behind him, on Venus. Just as these thoughts were racing through his head he felt a brush of wind on his face, and he realised he’d made it to the other side of the portal.
He was on a relatively small world. He could see for a good mile in each direction, but the amount the planet curved made it clear to him it wasn’t a very large planet. The gravity felt a good few times heavier than the Earth though which was confusing. Around him were expansive fields littered with small amounts of foliage. In the distance was a small fortress, and near it were three or four small shelters of a far less magnificent design.
Suddenly Josh sensed the energy of the Kai. It was following him through. He poured his energy into his still drawn sword, preparing to fight.
“Oh please,” came the disdainful voice from through the portal as the figure came into view. “You couldn't stop me even if you tried. Don’t make me kill you.”
“You still haven’t told me what you want.” Josh said, not lowering his guard even for a second.
“What I want? I want you to show me your real power. I can sense this isn’t everything you’re made of. There’s still some power hidden for you to tap into, but you chose not to. Why?”
Hidden power? What was this guy on about? “This is all my power, I already told you.” His acclimated state wouldn’t last forever either. “Why do you care so much?”
“Oh it’s no particular reason really. But I have been monitoring you for some time. Hm you’re right this is all you’re currently capable of. But trust me, there is a lot of power left for you to uncover and master. I can help you if you’d like. It’s been some time since I had anyone of interest to observe so this should be good. Don’t let me down” The Kai let out a slight smile. “I’m Zav, a Kai of the North Quadrant where Earth resides. And you are my new project.”
That last word unnerved Josh somewhat. “What do you mean by project?”
“Well you just have so much potential. We can’t let it go to waste can we. This is the world of the North Kais, we all reside here but I am far stronger than most Kais in this quadrant. That palace over there is ours. And the hurts beside it are for people like you, trainees of the Kais that spend time here.”
“Look I haven’t even agreed to become your servant or whatever it is and I feel like you’re making a lot of assumptions.”
The Kai grunted. He wasn’t a fan of rejection. “Let me put it this way Joshua. What do you know about your father?”
This again. “Nothing, I told you, I’ve never met either of my parents.”
“Interesting. What if I told you they were warriors of immense power, and you inherited this power from them.”
Josh paused for a second, but then came to his senses. What this Kai was saying actually made some sense, and if anyone knew about his parents it would be a powerful Kai, especially if they were powerful warriors.
“It would explain how the Override is so powerful.”
“Oh no, not this override technique you’re on about. That is part of it yes, but that is simply you drawing from an infinite well of power. There is a better name for that technique, but we’ll get to mastering that at a later date. For now we need to see what we can do about the complete lack of drive you seem to have. You could be one of the greatest warriors this galaxy has ever seen, and could lead liberating armies to save those in need of your help. But instead you wallow in your self pity, allowing yourself to remain just another warrior, powerful among your race but still weak compared to the rest of the universe. If you let me train you I can unlock your true power, make you the super warrior you were almost meant to be. But if you walk through that portal without accepting then you will never truly attain your power. And the people of Earth will never have the saviour they need.”
That was one hell of a decision. Not tough to make up his mind though.
Cassandra
The armies of Venus stood ready to fight whatever came back through that portal. At its entrance stood Cassandra and Holmes, along with the Phoenix company and many of the planet’s powerful commandos. The fleets were all mobilised, prepared to obliterate this entire side of the planet if this was what was needed to stop the threat to Venus and to Earth.
A figure began to shimmer into existence through the still active portals. Every soldier readied their rifle or ki as the figure moved through, into the reality on Venus. The form of an elite soldier made its way onto the sandy surface, as the recognisable energy of Josh returned to the planet he was sworn to protect.
He grinned straight at his apprentice. “Honey, I’m home.”
