DUSTY'S TAVERN, Planet Earth.
It was the sort of jive that should have been condemned on sight. The old saloon doors were haggard in appearance, the paint peeling to reveal rotted wood beneath in places. They creaked on half rusted hinges as Colt pushed his way into the dingy tavern, clattering shut as they banged together once closed behind him.
It was aptly named. A fine layer of sawdust covered every surface Colt could see—the warped wood of the dusty bar counter, or along the many unoccupied stools and chairs. It coated the floor in dominance, which boasted several dark and mysterious stains. His nose twitched as Colt sniffed. Yep. It was definitely a mix of fecal matter, vomit, and the tell-tale coppery hint of something worse—probably blood.
There were several patrons squeezed tight around the tables. He couldn't quite make out their features, and though it was brightly lit outdoors from the sunlight, it could hardly penetrate the thick coat of grime that covered the few windows. Each table was outfitted with a single lantern, soft ambient light just enough to distinguish the dark shape of patrons and tables from the ever deepening shadows that seemed to swirl and pulse with a life of their own.
It was the perfect place for shady dealings, planning heists, and hiring murderers. Coincidentally, this poor dejected hovel was the current meeting place for a job offer Colt could hardly refuse. His heavy boots thudding against the creaking boards of the wooden floor, Colt found an unoccupied booth and slid into it, the cushion beneath him stiff with age and overuse. He stretched out his long, lanky frame beneath, cupping a hand around the flame of his lighter as he placed a cigarette between his lips and lit it.
Gray smoke curled from his narrow nostrils as he observed the space around him. His ears were attuned to the whispered gossip that pervaded the atmosphere, stale with the stench of cigarettes and beer. Even if this current opportunity turned out to be a bust, maybe he could catch wind of a solid thread to follow.
Colt only wished he knew more about the woman he was set to meet.

A tap on the shoulder. It was perhaps one of the oldest tricks in the book in terms of deception. And if Colt slept like a normal human being, one would have to wake him quite early to pull that sort of wool over his eyes. But he wasn't normal, and he hadn't caught a good night's sleep in weeks.
Hence, the puffy bags beneath his gray eyes as he cast a glance over his shoulder, only to see nothing in the mire of the dirty hovel. All around him, people made their deals and sealed the fates of the unsuspecting with a handshake, or the clink of a glass as they drank to the mutual destruction of others.
"...shit." He'd fallen for the stupid trick. Colt steeled himself as he turned back around, only to catch sight of a petite young thing. She was pretty, sporting a black leather overcoat lined with a thick fur collar. Her white hair was well hidden beneath a gray hood, her bangs falling listless into her pale green eyes.
Colt supposed it could have been worse. But she certainly wasn't what he was expecting. He watched as she spread several photos along the table, featuring some familiar locales. Yeah, he'd been to all of them. No, he wasn't going to admit it aloud. And he couldn't give a damn about confidentiality being broken. This was a broken business, filled with dishonest people.
"How does it sound?" He murmured, smoke curling from the corner of his lips. Ashes fell from the tip of his lit cigarette as he spoke, drifting aimless before settling onto the rough wood of the unfinished table between them. His fingers drummed in rhythmic procession along the table top. It meant he was thinking. "I'd say it sounds too good to be true."
"How would I know you aren't just looking to screw me over? Pretty common in a place like this." He sighed, as if he were but a weary old man who couldn't be bothered with these sorts of jobs anymore. "By the way... Chomaka Ruins was a bust. Not that I'll confirm or deny that I was there," he finished with a dry chuckle. "Stuff gets around, you know?"

"While there is no doubt that you are skilled at dealing with dangerous situations - bust or not, you returned from the Chomaka Ruins alive - she wishes to see your combat proficiency firsthand."There was that word, combat. The Marshal was not particular on one's combat acumen. So long as they possessed the guile and cunning to escape from any situation, and sufficient skill with arms so as to be able to fight one's way out of trouble, they should be fine. The Albarican Rangers, after all, prided themselves on their abilities as scouts and trackers, hunters and seekers. Fighting wasn't their strongest suit, but there was a certain level of competency needed. Having the Suzerain of all people test it out, on the other hand... might have been a little excessive. To be sure, even back in their own universe, there was no need to have her personally test each candidate's skill. But this was different. This was part of the mission. As such, every potential exoversal recruit to the Expeditionary Fleet would have to go through the Suzerain, so that she could test their skill and see their techniques. "It is a most unusual request, considering that we have more use for your non-combat skills, but such is the desire of my Suzerain." Amidst all this, she had still yet to give any sufficient reason to trust her. The request was abnormal, the prospect of continuous employment sounded too good... Money.
It greased the wheels of the galactic universe, kept everything churning in the same broken pattern that it always had.
It was a necessary evil, and though currency wasn't evil in and of itself, it was the dark twisted motives that lurked deep within a mortal's heart that made it so. It wasn't so much money Colt was after—working jobs such as these were but a means to an end.
What he wanted was to kill Gadreel.
Just even thinking his demon father's name irritated him. Colt took a long drag on his cigarette, allowing the smoke to filter out of his nostrils as he listened to the woman speak. She hid her power well—it wasn't easy to get a beat on her. But he'd been around this block plenty of times before. He noted the slight bulges, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye.
She carried more that that credit chit on her.
"Suzerain. Never heard of her. Who is she, exactly?" He flicked more ash from his cigarette, holding it between his fingers as he regarded the stranger with open curiosity. "It isn't normal to request a first-hand example of a fighter's skill. So, what... I fight this employer of yours, and if she approves, I'm hired?"

But not quite the whole truth either. That was like saying a king ruled a castle within a state. It said nothing about how the king ruled the state itself... and that the state was but one province of her vast empire. Such was the case with Caerleon, Albarica, and the Albarican White Empire. Indeed, it was a most unusual request. But that was the mission. "You might say we are here on tour, in search of talent." She stuck a wad of some substance into a pipe, lit it up with a flick of a fire spell, and took a puff. Thinking herb. It gave one mental alertness for times such as this, when one was thinking. "She desires to learn the combative techniques used in this galaxy, in a way that we can apply in our own."Her eyes narrowed. "However, that is her personal task. His reputation proceeded him. That was good. Colt liked to keep a low profile, for the simple fact that trouble often found him unwarranted. Case in point, the drunken man stumbling in their direction. With just a sniff, Colt could determine he wasn't as inebriated as he wanted the pair to believe. It was a typical ploy—since neither Colt nor his companion were regulars, they were marked as easy targets.
Just as the man reached their table, he stumbled and fell against it. If they had drinks, it would have knocked them askew, but it was meant to create a diversion whilst greedy hands groped for valuables beneath the table. All he felt was the cold muzzle of a Desert Eagle, aimed at the spot between his ribs where his heart resided.
The man sobered up in a hurry, clearing his throat and uttering an apology before returning to his table with haste. I'm a pretty perceptive guy." It wasn't meant as a brag, but a simple fact.
One final drag on his cigarette and it was done. Colt ground it out against the table top, dropping the butt to the floor where it rolled to reside with a myriad of other discarded butts. "Alright, miss. I'll play along. If you want to sample the goods, who am I to refuse? Fact is you're paying a lot of money. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued. When do I meet this liege of yours?"

425 words @null "The Rangers are recruiting." Now, that allegedly drunken fellow coming up behind them was nowhere near drunk enough. Not to mention he didn't smell drunk at all. The least he could have done was give himself the odour. An amateur mistake, and one that her client rightfully picked up on at once. Yes, his skill set was really more fit to doing work for the Rangers than actually fighting with the Suzerain. With the smooth simplicity of how he dealt with the would-be ambush, he could clearly handle himself in dangerous situations such as this. But, as she explained earlier, the Suzerain wanted to see what he was made of in terms of fighting, before anything else. The little one nodded as he acquiesced to her offer, if only under the pretense of playing along. "This way, please." Standing up and leaving some credits on the table for the proprietor of the tavern, she led the way out. Down the street they went, perhaps for a block, perhaps two, maybe even five, weaving in and out of alleyways, until finally reaching a dead end a certainly safe distance from the pub. With a flick of her wrist, what appeared to be a pocket watch popped out of her sleeve and into her hand. Holding her thumb down on the set pin for five seconds, she spoke into it. If he were impressed with the elaborate set-up of his new employer, Colt didn't show it. He slipped the large weapon from his back, setting the sheathed greatsword on the floor at his feet. He strapped himself into the harness of his seat, then stretched his long legs out beneath the seat in front of him. The tip of his boot tapped the heel of the garbed soldier that sat in the seat in front of him.
"Pardon," he stated, an apologetic grin touching his clean shaven face. It wouldn't do to be rude, especially considering that generous credit chit secured in one of the many pockets of his long trench coat.
Leaning back with hands folded behind his head, Colt glanced over at the smaller woman. It was a tad comical—the sobering expression on her face, despite the fact her feet scarcely brushed the steel-plated floor beneath them. "Big fancy gunship full of well-behaved soldiers... expensive transporter... personal arena. Can't say I'm regretting this decision so far."
There were many thoughts that tugged at his mind. Colt managed to settle on just one for the moment. "You seem pretty strong. I imagine your liege is stronger, if she manages an operation like this. Ever hired anyone that could get the best of her? I'm not getting thrown in jail or anything if I beat her, am I?"
Colt wasn't the sort to boast about himself, or revel in his strength, though it may have been considerable. It was a genuine inquiry—he had always been a naturally curious person.

Again, the most detail she could give out, at least until the contract was confirmed, was that they were tourists from a galaxy far, far away. "In terms of strength, I am no match for some of her more elite Knights in direct combat..."She allowed the slightest hint of a smirk reveal itself, as she trailed off. There was a reason she was a Ranger Marshal, and not a Lord Knight. Direct combat was never an interest of hers. Not that she was squeamish, or anything. Taking on your opponent head-on was simply just so... inefficient. A wise man once said, the best way to defeat one's foe was to do so before the fighting started. Wise words indeed. "And of course, there is no penalty for defeating her. She is here to learn your fighting styles. If that means tasting bitter defeat, then all the better." If anything, that would only make her more eager to learn those techniques. The jump wasn't a long one.... but the warship certainly was. This universe would apparently consider it a battleship. And that was fine with them. They didn't need the locals to know that this planet slagger was a mere Sixth-Rate. Little needed to be said of the relatively cavernous hangar sporting an assortment of transports and strike craft, or the gaudy hallways... Or what a giant gold and blue Colosseum was doing inside a warship, of all things. But the woman standing at the centre of the arena, in the form-fitting.... combat regalia? That was one way to put it. Combat regalia. Well... quite a bit could be said about her. Not the least of which was this 'speedy' attire. Stopping a full ten feet, the Marshal dropped to one knee and bowed her head as deeply as possible. "My Liege. I present Colt Ceyx. Adventurer, warrior, and candidate for the Ranger Corps."The woman took a few moments to regard the man presented to her, to sense his power, before turning to her subordinate. "Well done, Marshal. You may return to your station now. I shall inform you once our engagement has concluded. I would, however, invite you to stay and watch. He shall be your charge, as per this contract, is he not?""Your invitation is most kind, my Liege," came the response. Rehearsed to perfection, it seemed. "How can I refuse? I shall be in the bleachers." With that, the Marshal vanished in a blur, to reappear in the distance. A quiet, lurking presence. The Suzerain went back to facing her would-be opponent. "Nice place you got here."
It was an odd thing to say to a capable looking woman brandishing a flagstaff. Colt didn't make light of the situation—her form was flawless, her stance impeccable. The way she balanced her weight upon the balls of her feet, which would allow for deft strikes and dodges if necessary.
He respected that.
He took in the vast, rich interior of the colosseum—an oval-shaped amphitheater with a perimeter lined in tall stone columns. Each column was decorative, adorned in silk and velvet drapings, royal blue with gilded gold edges. Tiers of cushioned seats surrounded the central space, lit torches set in even intervals hung from iron sconces that adorned the walls—more for decoration than practical use, as bright lights filtered down from the top of the domed ceiling.
It was a place that had seen many competitive battles.
"I won't disappoint you," he promised, shrugging out of his trench coat. "Let's keep to the spirit of this place. You want to know what I can do? I'll show you."
He removed his pistols from the leather harness strapped to his body, setting them onto the tiled stone floor and kicking them aside. They simply would not fit in this sort of fight.
Wanting to keep the element of surprise, Colt spiked his aura and launched himself in powered flight at Rhomynia. In one smooth motion, he drew his greatsword. It swung in a massive arc over his head, aiming to bring it down upon her head. Two vicious swipes to put her on the defensive.

Even the appearance of respect for a certain ideal, tradition, or theme meant his social skills would allow him to fit in. The Suzerain watched as he discarded his firearms and drew his blade for the attack. Ranged weapons were certainly not banned from tournaments, considering many warriors were able to fall back on using ranged ki attacks. However, the latter required years of training and mastery to effectively wield. A gun was so simple to learn that a peasant could master it in a few weeks of concentrated practice. Perhaps it was this... convenience... that gave them a bad reputation amongst others. Mynia raised her flagstaff above her head, catching the first stroke. The second, however, knocked it aside, and the blade came down on her shoulder, digging into flesh... Not quite enough to cut through it, though. When the sword withdrew, clean white skin remained unblemished. Now, it was her turn. She began by putting her ki into focus. Space appeared to warp around her, as if primed to bend to her will. Nigh-invisible threads seeped out into the air, slender tendrils to be used for detection purposes... an early warning system to inform her of perhaps... one potential threat, and thus nullify it... Or perhaps turn it against its master. These completed, the Suzerain began her own offensive, the flagstaff charged with ki, as she spun it into a makeshift lance, thrusting into her opponent's abdomen. He could have sworn he got her. But as his blade sliced at her pale flesh, Colt's eyes widened in shock to see that despite catching her in the shoulder, Rhomynia came away unscathed.
What sort of woman is this?
He'd seen enemies tank heavy blows from him in the past. But this was on a whole other level. His distracted mind would be his downfall as Mynia countered with a powerful thrust from her flagstaff. As he was in the air, unable to curb his momentum, Colt followed the swing of his blade and managed to turn his body sideways, though not quick enough to avoid getting hit. The tip of her staff slammed into his ribs with tremendous force, enough to knock him sideways. Colt hit the ground and rolled into one of the nearby columns.
