The desert sun--well, suns, were beaming down. Kabocha had a strange sky, it was more a dusky green color at night, never truly as dark as earth's night and in the dry season a pair of duel suns scorched the sands of the wastes. Cam assumed Absolut had never seen Cam's homeworld, perhaps educating him on the plight of his people would bring a breadth of understanding and sympathy. Make the frost demon more cooperative or if nothing else, educate him. And so it was that when Absolut was awakened for his training regimen on the ship by Duria, that he was escorted down to the hangar. Cam was there to meet him, nodding his greetings. A full retinue of Crusher Corp. regulars, two platoons in total, were filed onto a large ship, meant to act as a guard and their power levels meant to mask Absolut's from anyone who got too curious. At least with a scouter or using sensory abilities it would seem like a mob of soldiers were training in the desert, and that's exactly what Cam wanted everyone else to think. As they filled on to a sleek outrunner looking ship, Absolut would be escorted to a small common area that doubled both for socializing as well as a cafeteria. About ten soldiers sat around, playing cards, one sat on a couch in the corner playing a pocket game of some sort. "Duria tells me your training has been going well," Cam said to the younger frost demon, "High praise from him. The Saiyan isn't easily impressed. You have your father's potential, though it would seem you don't have his same level of... Ambition." Indeed, as Absolut hadn't tried to so much as resist or destroy anyone or anything since Cam had more or less taken the boy hostage, "I want to see for myself. You have to be tested against overwhelming odds. Only way one truly gets better." He glanced over at Absolut then, "That's how I learned to use all of my abilities and sense, how I learned to defeat super Saiyans, and fight legendary ones as well. I'll pass that skill on, if you let me." he concluded by adding, "We should eat. It'll take a little time to get to where we're going." After all, the warlord hadn't eaten any breakfast. Moving over to the chef to have something cooked for him, in the morning basic, simple meals were preferred; some type of egg with vegetables and meat from an animal that vague resembled a bull from a far off planet were served. Cam's soldier at well, the Crusher Corp. had cemented for itself a good base by being a constant defense for Breadbasket planets further away from the core worlds and often were simply paid with the exchange of some funds and provisions of food from a myriad of planets. Dinner time it seemed, never got too old or redundant but only foods that were high calorie and nutritional seemed to be served, as the Crusher Crop refused to have soldiers that were too out of shape or a liability on the field of battle. Moving to eat with a squad of elite soldiers, Cam beckoned for Absolut to follow. Whether he did or whether the boy chose to go dine somewhere else, Duria would be with him at all times, making sure the young prodigy to be didn't attempt to free himself. One never knew when the empire was watching, truly. Though Cam usually had a pretty good idea of if he was being spied on, even if he couldn't pinpoint a source, in fact the Warlord operated on the assumption that Polaris knew he had his son, or rather would know soon. It was always better to assume the worst with such high stakes.

Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil Today, Duria woke Absolut up for something new. Today was not going to be a day of training solo or desperately trying to land a punch on the intimidating Saiyan, like all other days had been up to now. Duria did not disclose exactly what the Frost Demon was going to see today, but the Saiyan appeared surprisingly excited for what was going to happen. At least, that's what Absolut imagined. He was never great at reading facial clues. It has been some time since that fateful encounter on Thyelia. What has changed? Absolut was training, and hard. Assigned a personal mentor in the form of Duria, the Frost Demon was pushing his limits and learning everything that the Patrol Academy and his measly experience in the battlefield did not tell. And, perhaps for the first time in Absolut's life, it was working! The Frost Demon was improving, honing his skills, trying to develop a fighting style that was not just copying the flashiest moves used by his father. And Cam, from what little Absolut had seen of him since that meeting, was interested in Absolut growing as strong as possible, too. Who knows, maybe he will even end up involved in this war Cam has been fighting? That would be... scary. But it's not like there was much of a choice. Speak of the devil - escorted to the hangar by a platoon of Crusher Corps soldiers, Absolut saw Cam with the corner of his eye, who waved his greetings and boarded the same ship as the unit, right before it took off and left the station. While the rest of the soldiers were busy spending the time of the voyage playing card games or socializing, the Frost Demon rested his back in one of the corners, slightly lifting his finger up and lefting ki sparks fly above it. Controlling his energy and focusing it into compact energy attacks had been one of the main points Absolut had to learn during his time here. Back in Patrol, he just fired off ki wildly, roughly mirroring his father's techniques - of course, a lesser version of them. So now, with nothing else to do, why not hone these skills further? At least until Cam himself approached him, speaking about the results of his training. And not just repeating the point that Absolut had grown a lot since his arrival, but also that he... seemed to lack Polaris's ambition? The young Frost Demon lowered his eyes immediately. He probably means something about the fact that Absolut has dutifully acted as Cam wished since his... kidnapping. To think that Absolut was trying to pull the same thing he now completely despised his father for - hiding his true intentions, acting complacent and following orders to grow stronger and thus find a way to escape Cam's grasp, which he still viewed as captivity... At least it was a good thing that Cam was not aware of that. Or, even if he was aware of that, did not break character. "T-thanks. Duria has been a good trainer... though not a very soft one." Cam soon revealed his real intentions - he wanted to see Absolut's progress with his own eyes. Test him against overwhelming odds. Which could only mean one thing - Cam wanted Absolut to spar with him. The mere thought of having to fight against someone who could defeat Super Saiyans and toss Absolut around with his mind alone sent shivers through his body, and the boy tensed up. But, then again... the training he had done during his time here gave him a little bit more confidence. After all, Cam and Duria both complimented his progress? Maybe it won't be completely one-sided?.. What are you kidding, it will totally be completely one-sided. The offer to have breakfast dispersed those thoughts, however, and Absolut followed after Cam and Duria, taking a glass of grape juice - a non-alcoholic alternative to wine, a constant presence in Frost Demon diet - and a few sandwiches. After taking his light snack, the Frost Demon decided to sit next to the warlord - after all, there was one thing he needed to ask Cam. One very important thing. "Um... mister Cam?.." Calling Cam 'mister' had become Absolut's preferred way to refer to the Kabochan. After all, all things considered, Cam was not just a mentor or a trainer, but also the leader of these people, so you have to be at least a little official when talking to him. "I've got something to ask." The Frost Demon took a gulp, building up a little confidence. "Some time ago... Coca and Duria visited my room. They told me to suppress my power immediately and keep it locked away from hours, because my father was here... What was he doing here? Does he know that I'm here?" Truth be told, that last thought was pretty darn scary. (811 words) Defensive Phase

"Mister Cam," he heard as he was about to speak to the officer across from him, glancing over at the frost demon, "Please. Just Cam," he asked, he would have accepted Emperor or, "If you want to be formal you can use my full name, Carambolis," he then set his fork down, heaving a sigh, "The short answer? We don't know. The longer answer? I suspect not. If he does know he hasn't acted yet, but we're trying to keep your presence as hidden as we can," he then crooked a one sided smile, "Why do you think you've been training daily? I've been trying to rapidly raise your power level to make it more unrecognizable. Think of it as sort of hiding in plain sight." Once your power level is about doubled you can probably relax with it more." Cam then stated simply, "You don't need to worry about your father, yet." He shrugged once, "Who knows? I might come to more amicable terms than I first thought with him helping me take back our home world." he raised a finger to interject before Absolut could protest, "Rest assured though, you wouldn't be given up unless your safety could be guaranteed." Or a fat ransom he supposed, though in reality if asked, Cam would deny. To not do so would be entirely foolish in his mind, and he didn't care to give anyone stronger motive to try and kill him. "I understand all of this us nerve-wracking. Duria isn't soft by any means, but that's a good thing. You get on his good side you'll start to find his dry sense of humor funny." There ship would arrive in short order, Duria approaching both of them as they talked about him, "My ears were burning. We've arrived, when you're ready," Cam looked towards Absolut, "You can voice your concerns here. I do want to make your stay as comfortable as possible so long as it doesn't compromise what we're trying to do." Standing up he looked Absolut in the eye, "When you're done, come meet me outside the ship. There's some things you should see." The landscape outside quite frankly was a wasteland. The atmosphere was dirty, breathing here was like standing next to a cigarette, other species often had a hard time on Kabocha but they had adapted due to technology as well as genetics, a few sparse shrubs and stunted trees dotted the orange dusty landscape. Further out all around them though, were tall monoliths: Skyscrapers as well as ships and cruisers that had speared themselves into the ground. A city that was two hundred years old, that had survived three sieges, snuffed out in a single battle with the now disbanded Frieza force fleet that had attacked it. The city was devoid of life it seemed and entirely in disrepair. dried out and stunted vines had crept over many of the buildings, creeping in and out of shattered windows. Though this was all dwarfed, in the shade of something much larger that Absolut had likely never seen nor heard of he suspected. A tree of might. Albeit, a stunted one, but the tree itself was still thirty miles high, reaching higher than any building on the planet. It didn't look healthy though, branches withered, buds rotted, leaves blotches of leaves brown here and there before they shuddered and fell from the tree, replaced with already green buds. The tree was sick, unhealthy as the planet itself seemed to not be able to sustain a fully grown tree of might, and thus the tree sapped the planet of life slowly while it floundered in the desert earth. This was home for Cam, once upon a time. "The entire planet save one city had been wiped clean at one point in time or another. Those that survive become nomads and scavengers, moving from destroyed city to destroyed city. Some become salvors and like buzzards pick over the large fleet graveyards out in the desert or plunder the cities got loot and old technology. They fight off bandits and pirates, the elements, the wildlife. All of this was started by one man, likely only as strong as Duria, but a Saiyan all the same. It's been killing us slowly ever since," Cam explained, "I hope to end that cycle. But it can only happen if the planet is stable." He looked over at Absolut, beckoning for him to follow as he lead the way into the city. Just where were they going?

Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil After briefly explaining to Absolut that calling him 'mister' was not going to fly - not that Absolut was going to just stop saying something he was used to saying so easily - Cam put his fork down and gave a brief explanation. He didn't know, but from what he has seen so far, it appears unlikely, because Polaris has had yet to act against the Kabochan for kidnapping his child if he did know. After an off-hand comment that he and the Emperor might be able to come to an agreement, Cam immediately added that Absolut's freedom was not going to be a negotiations piece, in an attempt to calm down the Frost Demon before he interjected. Absolut's heart raced faster than usual regardless. Sure, Cam had no plans to give up Absolut... but what about Polaris? What if Polaris learns about Absolut's presence and gives, say, a very simple demand - give up Absolut or perish with your whole planet? Would Cam still be so adamant in keeping Absolut under his wing then? The Frost Demon shook at the mere thought. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, happy thoughts... Trying to forget all that, Absolut didn't even notice that his conversation with Cam was over and Duria had now approached them. The warlord informed him that if he had any concerns, he should voice them now, or else meet him outside of the ship. The Frost Demon took a gulp, quickly downed the remainders of his sandwich and responded: "N-no thanks, I'm good." A few moments later, he had already stepped out of the spaceship, slowly descending down the stairs towards Kabocha's desolate surface, a mixture of shock, awe and fear spread across his face. Kabocha looked less like a planet and more like a scene from a science fiction movie - a desolate, hellish landscape, an atmosphere so dense and dirty that even a Frost Demon like him, who didn't need to breathe, felt disgusted by it, and the abandoned ruins of a city tangled with vines and wood-like outgrowths across the streets. And that wasn't all. A gigantic, stunted monolith of a tree, many kilometers tall, stood in the distance, its roots spreading across the planet's surface like a thick carpet. How was such a lifeform... even possible? There couldn't be enough nutrients in this planet to feed something this big!.. Even lush, pristine worlds such as Abbayor never had flora this massive. And Kabocha definitely did not look like a second Abbayor - hell, outside of the gigantic tree sprawling near the city, almost no plant life could be found anywhere up to the horizon. So how is this tree even possible?.. Cam did not answer this question. However, he did hint at the answer. Started by a Saiyan hundreds of years ago, it has been killing them ever since. Kabocha had suffered through a lot of hardships and this tree appeared to be one of them - and Cam appeared adamant to end that cycle. Absolut didn't have much warm feelings for the person who kidnapped him, but here... something did tinge in his heart. If Cam was honest, then he wasn't just your average pirate or warlord. He was acting for others. For his people, who had suffered a lot. Absolut couldn't claim to be an expert in Galactic history, but even he had heard that Kabocha had always been an important strategic prize for galactic conquerors, including the Frieza Force. Wiping everything clean, like Cam stated. And isn't feeling empathy for suffering a great part of what makes a hero? "Mister Cam... what is that tree supposed to be, though?" Absolut spoke up after Cam finished his explanation. "I've never heard of normal trees growing this big... A tree of this size looks like it would need the nutrients of a continent just to survive." Leading his way through the ruined city, Cam explained the answer to Absolut's question, occasionally refreshing the scan on his scouter to make sure that he wasn't being watched or that anyone was nearby, he figured he was the only one to come to this place aside from those who were still condemned to live deeper in the ruins of the city. "It's a tree of might," he concluded, "Or was supposed to be. You plant a seed deep into the planet and it grows massive. Reaching high into the atmosphere where it's leaves can soak up every ounce of sunlight and moisture and its roots burrow to the core of the planet, soaking up every drop of water," coming to a heap of a wreck, crashed and destroyed vehicles from whatever ancient war happened here. Cam pushed aside one of the vehicles, going on, "The tree once mature, grows fruit that if eaten, is said to greatly enhance ones power. Eat enough of it and you could become the strongest person alive in terms of raw power." The Kabochan explained, "But the conditions have to be right. If something about the planet--weather patterns, soil nutrients, air quality, water and moisture amounts, and a whole other myriad of factors. If something is too off on the planet, the tree grows warped and stunted. Such was the case here. The tree bears no fruit, but there's enough life left on the planet to sustain it such as it is. In turn it's been slowly draining all resources from the planet. Kabocha five hundred years ago was a blue and green jewel. Now it's this. All because one Saiyan came here and planted a tree." Tearing through some vines and continuing to clear a path, they were making their way towards the base of the tree itself it seemed. "Our Prince at the time--Prince Diaz, faced the Saiyan alone in combat. It's said he fought with such valor that the Saiyan spared him and everyone still alive on our planet under the condition he serve him. Diaz left with the Saiyan to go find a more suitable world and in doing so, saved us from total destruction, but the planet slowly continued to with. Our enemies--the Ikondans, a species from a nearby planet, started attacking us in our weakened state. Without fail, they send a fleet to attack the capital every few years. Our Ion cannons disable their fleets and they come crashing to earth, burying themselves in the sand over time. Just another cycle I intend to end. Ikonda and Kabocha would be strong allies if they could set aside our history of war." Having reached the base of the tree, Cam turned to face Absolut, "The tree is our arena. Don't care about collateral damage. Every bit of destruction we do to it buys the planet more time." Growing a knowing grin he couldn't repress, "I'll give you the first attack Absolut. You may begin when you're ready, don't hold back, show me everything you've learned," he bobbed a shoulder and added, "If you win and defeat me, I'll even let you go." Summary: Cam uses taunt.

Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil God dammit, why does everything have to be this complicated? Why is his abductor... not just a villain Absolut could just hate with a passion while trying to escape... but an actual human person? Why couldn't everything be simple and easy to solve, like what the Frost Demon saw on television during his childhood? Kabocha, his planet, the world Cam was fight for, was a victim, of a Saiyan who planet the seed of the Tree of Might and let the world wither away while the tree drained its resources. Since then, Kabocha has been plagued by constant wars, attacks, raids from across the Galaxy and from nearby planets, and yet this world's inhabitants continued to thrive and, if Cam is an example of their species, have only grown more adamant in their desire to seek freedom from this cycle of destruction. They weren't villains of bad people, they just wanted all of that suffering to end. That search for freedom from destruction also played a part in what was about to take place between the two of them. The base of the Tree of Might was designated by Cam as the battlefield for the spar between him and Absolut - and, much to the Frost Demon's surprise, the warlord not only did not condemn him releasing his power wildly and damaging the environment, but actually encouraged it, pointing out that every single bit of damage on the tree in front of them will buy this planet more time. Not only that, but Cam also off-handedly mentioned that if Absolut somehow were to win his match, he will be let go. No questions asked. He's trying to encourage me to release everything I have by dangling it in front of me as a carrot. Why would he not? It's simple mind games. And Cam showed his expertise in those back on Thyelia. Absolut closed his eyes, then straightened up and lowered his head, in a typical opening greeting for martial artists, then spoke: "I'll do my best, Mr. Cam!" On the very next moment, a bright blue aura suddenly burst to life around the Frost Demon, shining over all sources of light in the vicinity of the two combatants and picking up dust and ashes across the battlefield as it swirled across the air. Soon, however, that aura began to condense around Absolut's right hand, collapsing into it and forming a thin, razor sharp energy blade, almost as an extension of the boy's arm. There's no chance for me to actually defeat Cam here, but nothing says I can't give my all. After all, he already knows about my potential, so the only person I'm trying to prove myself to here is me...
Alright, as we practiced.Suddenly, Absolut's right foot slammed into the ground, using the small hole it made as an anchor for propelling the whole body forward. The Frost Demon instantly picked up speed and opened with a wide vertical energy blade slash. Don't give any opening to recover. With a melee energy attack, your defensive options are limited, as you can't use one of your hands for defense, so you need to keep attacking your opponent and don't give him a chance to strike back.Just as Absolut remembered, so was enacted. The Frost Demon followed up with a swift barrage of energy slashes, most of them horizontal, trying to constantly press his offensive onto Cam and keep him on his toes. At the very least, it's the best he could do with such a massive difference in power level. (596 words) Defensive Phase

And just like that they were fighting. Absolut was attacking and Cam was on guard, he hadn't expected Polaris kid to have so much inherit potential, as he managed to actually strike a few painful blows in his attacks, though they were foolishly telegraphed and Cam took advantage of that telegraphing, even so though it only helped to soften blows, not halt them altogether. Cam was a preferred close range fighter and as soon as Absolut closed it, Cam swung one fist down at the top of Absolut's skull with inhuman speed and force, augmented and strengthened by the use of his ki, before his free hand pointed off to Cam's left, sweeping upwards he unleashed a salvo of small ki orbs that would bend and twist in their trajectory as they were aimed to pummel into Absolut's body with stunning force if they weren't avoided. The Orbs exploding after several slams in a burst of energy. He's doing better than I thought. With a sweep of his hand Cam unleashed a torrent of ki bolts, quick but weak and meant to take way any momentum Absolut had gained from the start, trying to seal the attack pattern solid as he charged up one of his Crusher Orb attacks, an opaque red ball of light sent hurtling forwards to crash into the frost demon, impacting like a cannon ball before detonating with energy that imploded, ripping at everything caught in the explosion the attack caused, including parts of the tree of might. Cam leaped upwards, flying into the branches. "Lets see how you fair on unknown territory!" Absolut had no choice but to pursue. Summary: Cam deflects Absolut's attack, that paired with his armor takes a lot of the sting out of Absolut's attacks. Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil Perhaps engaging Cam in close range combat was not a very good idea, because as it turns out, this was the warlord's specialty. Though Absolut got a couple of good hits in, it was far from enough to subdue his opponent, and he soon went on a counter-offensive, starting by dealing a heavy combination of blows, both energy and physical, to kill any momentum the Frost Demon still had and give Cam ample time to charge up a powerful energy blast in his hand. Absolut was dazed by the unexpected counterattack and stumbled back a meter or two, but as soon as he saw red light filtering from Cam's hand at the corner of his eye, his mind went into instinct mode. Aaah! Aaah! Shield! Shield!Suddenly, moments before the Crusher Orb slammed into him, the energy blade surrounding his hand flattened and widened, forming a hand shield which deflected the orb, leaving the Frost Demon unharmed. Absolut opened his eyes, not sure why the barrage of pain was taking so long to reach him, only to notice that he had just pulled off something new. Creating energy constructs with your ki, either as weapons or as tools, was not a concept new to Absolut, but he had never been able to create anything besides a generic ki blade... I think... I think... I just thought of getting a shield... and it happened...While Absolut was still wondering what just happened, Cam was already long gone, flying across the Tree of Might's branches and daring the Frost Demon to go after him. His hand shield morphed back into a standard energy blade and Absolut took off, speeding through opening after opening in the dense branches of the tree while trailing after the warlord. There was no chance of just catching up to Cam like that, though - as such, Absolut quickly came up with a plan. With his free left hand, the Frost Demon fired a series of small energy blasts, aiming at some of the larger branches, setting them loose and soon causing a rain of dry wood across the battlefield to try to obscure the Kabochan's vision, while he morphed his energy blade into a javelin and tossed it straight towards Cam as a ranged attack. That's not all. Generating a second energy blade and hoping that Cam was busy deflecting the javelin, Absolut sped through the branches, taking a longer path from the left to try to get around Cam's field of vision and get him with a surprise attack, at which point he would go for a yet another barrage of slashes with his energy blade. It was interesting to see Absolut develop his energy control. He clearly had just learned a new way to defend himself, for the little good it would do him. He had taken the bait and pursued, or at least attacked Cam, showing a level of mastery that Absolute was likely not familiar with, when his lance of ki came flying in Cam dodged one before his hand snapped out to catch the other, gritting his teeth at the pain it caused him to do so. He had stopped the orb from exploding, compressing its power down before he sent it flying back at Absolut, albeit not quite as strong as it had been. Of course that was just to soften him up. The Kabochan moved quick as lighting behind the attack at the young Frost demon, once more closing in now with a ferocious burst of speed he tried to jam an elbow into Absolut's side of his neck before he would duck low and sweep a leg, trying to knock Absolut's feet out from under him, trying to drive the combo home when he glared at Absolut, beginning to choke him with his psychic energy, an invisible iron grip trying to coil around Absolut's throat and squeeze. "Better than I expected, but you'll still need to up the ante if you intend on leaving this place boy. I can see we still have a lot of work to do," trying to tighten his grip further. Indeed, Absolut had a lot more adversity to face still, but it would come in time. Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil
Absolut's small little spur against the Kabochan warlord turned out to be short lived. Cam soon regained the upper hand in the battle, compressing the Frost Demon's basic energy javelin construct into a ball to toss it back, only to suddenly follow it up with a powerful combination of physical attacks and psychic powers. Not long after, Absolut was left floating and immobilized like a kebab on a stick, only able to release sounds of being choked while Cam explained that he needed to put a lot more work in before he could hope of escaping this place.
Every fiber in Absolut's mind wished to move forward and smash his head in between the Kabochan's eyes, or at least do anything to continue the fight. And yet, his body had been completely immobilized, and from an outsider's perspective, it might appear that the Frost Demon was not even trying.
Finally, though, the Frost Demon managed to do something, that is, to slowly mutter a few words:.
"Can I... Can you... let me go?.."
Tears were starting to swell up in Absolut's eyes and the boy clenched his teeth. After all, even if Frost Demons like him don't need to breathe, having your mech relentlessly choked was still agonizing - especially when he had nothing to do against it.

It took only a moment to see that Absolut had been bested and was giving up in his fight. He used his psychic powers to pull Absolut closer, the choking hand around his neck loosened though Cam made sure the boy couldn't move his body with his unseen hands of psychic energy, "You did alright against a conventional foe. Not everyone can fight with their minds," the warlord explained, "I can though. I wager your father can as well and I know others who do. It's how I fight and it's one of the hardest things to deal with--thoughts are quicker than fists and energy blasts, and if you can manifest them correctly you could turn a person inside out with nothing but your mind," the gory mental image likely a horrible one to imbue in a child's mind but he needed to understand the kind of great and terrible power he could have at his disposal, "All you need to do is learn to control ki energy--not just your ki energy though, all ki energy," the hand releasing the teenage warrior. "But you also have to learn to contend with such attacks, otherwise your fights with such a foe will, at best, go as well as ours did now." "Crying won't save you from your enemies Absolut. Thinking will. Never stop thinking and never give your foe times to think. It takes concentration to do what I do, same with anyone else, you interrupt it, you stand a good chance of walking away alive," staring the younger man in directly in the eye, Cam asked simply, "Do you understand?" He asked, as he did so he looked around the tree they had taken on as their arena. It wasn't long until he found what he was looking for: A bud of the tree. One of the few flowers that had lived long enough to form a bud that was just starting to form into an infant fruit, left to its own devices it would never make it there, wilting and rotting before it could mature. But in its infant form it made for a decent surge of energy that could reconstitute a warrior and keep them in the fight, handing one to Absolut Cam would instruct, "It's no tree of might fruit, but it will give you a small increase in power and heal some of your wounds, though I hope I kept those to a minimum." Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil
After explaining the basics of using psychic powers for combat purposes, and instilling a few gory images of turning a person inside out in Absolut's mind, Cam let the thoroughly shocked boy go, his body falling to the ground. Well, not to the ground - they were fairly high above the planet's surface, so instead the Frost Demon slumped on one of the tree's larger branches - but you get the point.
There was no chance in hell that Absolut would ever want to learn psychic combat, even if Cam were to force him. It was just so... disgusting, freezing your enemies in place, rendering them immobile and taking them apart while they cannot do anything about it... That sounds like something a villain would do. And Absolut never abandoned his dreams of being something his father failed to be - a real hero, and a real hero would never do something this... brutal.
"I-I understand..." Absolut muttered in response to Cam's harsh question, weakly raising his head from the surface of the branch. The warlord soon brought the Frost Demon something - a fruit of an odd sort, which, according to Cam, would recover Absolut's health and give him a small boost in power. With little other options available, Absolut picked the fruit up and took a bite. A sudden, mysterious surge of energy burst across his body, as if he had just woken up from a refreshing sleep. Cuts and blunt wounds inflicted during the battle patched up so quickly that one might wonder whether they were even there before. After finishing the fruit, Absolut stood up, back in full capacity.
Not in full mental health, though.
"I'm... not sure if I'll make it, Mr. Cam," Absolut muttered, doing his best to clean up the tears on his eyes. "I started out at such a low level that I'll be nothing but a handicap to you in battle for a long time. I won't ever be able to hold my ground against anything more than mere grunts... And your enemies won't hold back against me the same way you do."
There's never going to be a chance for Absolut to ever escape Cam, either. Unless Cam dies by someone's hand. However, then Absolut will have much greater problems to be concerned about than just finding a way to escape...
"Maybe it would be more cost-effective to just use the resources you spend on me to arm a squad of Kabochan soldiers... or just sell me off back to my father."

The emperor moved to the edge of the large branch they stood on. He acted for a moment as if he hadn't heard Absolut's words of despair, "Boy, you have your mother's heart don't you?" he asked finally. His head turning to eye the young frost demon, "I used to think all of this was... Too much for me. Maybe it was and who I am now is a completely different person. I know this is not what you want to hear, but honor, glory, the notion of a good war?" The kabochan shook his head, "No such thing. When the Frieza force came long ago, my father fought with honor," looking down from the tree branch far below, "It got him killed much in the way that I described, by a Frieza Force Lieutenant, then after he fell they took the cities children as recompense for rebellion. I was raised by some monstrous people and as such I might have brutal abilities, I may not always show mercy but my hands are gentler than the circumstances that forged them. Wanting to hang on to those things is good, it is really. Mercy isn't a bad thing, I try to show it when I can but I hold no illusions about this world. There are people who don't deserve mercy. Who will commit all kinds of acts of brutality upon you if you let them, that want will only grow with your power and when people eventually figure out who you are. This would be the case whether you got stronger under me or if you were still serving your father or the Valkyries. It's all very scary, and I'm a lot scarier than most. I know this." His fists tightened at the thoughts and memories that settled in his mind for a time, here Absolut was already talking about giving up and that simply would not do, "Train with Duria more. You're coming on my next mission. My soldiers will be with you to help protect you, but you must learn to fight, and fight savagely and without mercy at times, you already know how to spare a life, but I don't think you know how to defeat a foe, or how to kill them if necessary," And with that Cam stepped forward and simply shot to the ground. Leaning down to pick up his cloak and scouter and refit them on himself. He turned as he began to walk back to the ship, Absolut needed time to come to grips with what was going to happen, certainly, but Cam had faith in him. A trail by fire, even if Absolut got a little burned, was exactly what was needed. If the boy survived an actual battle and got some fighting experience, he just might be able to face what would come if he aligned with the Valkyries, or against his father. whatever the future head, it was likely going to be a lot more gritty and far less clean that what Absolut's concept of war was, a bleak image, but Cam had taken prisoners and left survivors of the Crusher Corps wrath. He wasn't an exemplary paragon of mercy and justice like Absolut's idols, but Cam certainly wasn't the murderer that his father had become, he was simply a man who understood the value of life in war, and that people were always worth more both to him and others, alive rather than dead, even if they were an enemy at times. He knew what mercy was, even if his version of it wasn't the same version as the young frost demons. He would just have to live with that for a time, that or escape.

Mr. Cam's Reluctant Pupil
"My... mother's... heart?.." Absolut repeated Cam's words, his expression grew more cloudy and and his eyes began trailing across the ground. Did Cam know about his mother, that she was a truly good hearted person unlike her husband? And that's why he suddenly mentioned her, as an appeal to the Frost Demon's past? Absolut did not know the answer to that question, but the thought resonated within him regardless.
Didn't Cam mention when they first met today that he carries his father's potential, but not his ambition? This made the comparison reach full circle.
That wasn't the only thing which had an impact on Absolut's psyche in this conversation, either. During Cam's whole speech, the Frost Demon felt a deep urge to speak out, try to argue against the life lessons which the warlord was presenting. Even the most evil villains and minions cannot just be killed without even a chance at giving them mercy, or to repent for their crimes, or tried for them to enact righteous justice! For Absolut, that was the difference between a hero and a villain, and it was the ethic behind which the Galactic Patrol was founded. And yet, he could not find the initiative within him to speak out, to interrupt Cam, or even raise his hand.
Weakling! Weakling! Weakling! You're supposed to be a hero, why do you constantly hesitate? Do you want to fade into obscurity forever? Because that is how you fade into obscurity forever!
The last important thing to note was the news Cam brought. He had decided to take Absolut on his next mission. Give the young Frost Demon a taste of the battlefield, a little bit of a trial by fire against enemies who will not hesitate to harm him or kill him. The mere thought of being thrown into a battlefield shook Absolut to the core - what if he dies? Or is captured? Or compromises Cam's entire mission? Or gets lost? Or...
Cam started walking away, not even waiting for Absolut to make up his mind and agree, indicating that he is going to give the Frost Demon a minute of time to decide on his next choice of action alone.
It would be so easy to say 'no' right now. Just open your mouth, say a word or two and you will be saved.
It would be even easier to just suddenly lower your power level and run as fast as you can to the opposite direction.
For the first time in a long while, Absolut made his next move without thinking or getting weighed down by the conflux of emotions and thoughts in his mind. The young Frost Demon ran forward, catching up to Cam, and spoke:
"Alright, I'll be by your side. If you think that would be best, Mr. Cam, I'll help you on this mission."
The Frost Demon's clouded, somber facial expression started to clar out, replaced by a slight, though confident smirk.
"If I have my father's potential and my mother's heart, then I'll show you and everyone watching that I can put this heritage to use."
