285 words @null "A person in the middle of nowhere." Staring out of her viewing dais, the Suzerain contemplated. The sheer vastness of space that was there, separated by a few metres of reinforced transparisteel. And yet, as far as the eye could see, was only a measly speck in an island of stars, a galaxy. And even that in turn, was only a speck in an entire universe. One of twelve, formerly eighteen. So what were the odds of encountering anybody all the way out here? It was interstellar space, the darkness between suns. Beyond the planes of a star system. Out here, a cubic centimetre would contain at most, a million molecules. Compare that to the average planet's atmosphere, which held more. Much more. Thirteen orders of magnitude more. Even the specks were utterly empty specks. According to calculations, the odds of encountering anyone out here were practically impossible. That was what made it such a great place to conceal themselves, in between activities. Most ships passing this way would do so within hyperspace. After all, the only places of any interest would be within the gravity fields of stars. And even then, most star systems were empty space, with 99% of their mass being part of their sun. And yet, even with such absurd chances, sometimes, mere coincidence was enough. The Suzerain blinked. There was no mistake, her blood rate slightly increasing. There was a relatively significant power level within sensing range. Ordering a lifesign scan revealed an individual within a few thousand kilometres. Well within point blank range. But try hitting something as small as a person with Macrobatteries. There was a solace found in space that could not be found elsewhere in the universe. The Gods of Creation, in their infinite wisdom, understood that everything required balance. Just as there was light, there needed to be darkness. Just as there was hot, there needed to be cold. Dry, and wet. Small, and large.
Good, and evil.
Everything needed an equal opposite, or the balance of the universes would be throw into disarray. And for as long as Aubus had been alive, it was the solitude and emptiness that the vast stretch of blackness offered that brought him the most peace.
Twas a strange thing to find solace in, to be sure, but it reminded Aubus of a simpler timeβback when the universe was young, full of wonder and possibility. Back when mortalkind understood it was but a byproduct of the grace and charity of the Kais. Since he'd come to the mortal realm, Aubus had been treated with disrespect, even malice. Save for Marku, a powerful student of the Crane School on Earth, there was hardly a soul that knew what he was, and that he was to be afforded the utmost respect.
Here, in the blank stretches of the cosmos, Aubus could feel the hum of life around himβsee it in the swirling patterns of planets and stars. Even that which was inanimate possessed a measure of the life essence infused into all things by the Supreme Kai. And Aubus could discern their gratitude.
Until that gratitude was disturbed.
Opening his eyes, Aubus sensed more than heard the approach of the ship. Full of the serene sense of being at one with creation, a languid smile touched his lips at the approach of the large ship. It was well-armored and equipped, certainly no freighter or battle pod. Though Aubus felt little more than curiosity as its approach.
He continued to drift, watching with intrigue, wondering just what the purpose of this ship's captain could be to accost him here, of all places.

285 words @null "A person in the middle of nowhere." As the vessel drew closer, the Suzerain could sense more details about this person... specifically, about their power. There was a distinct nature to it, almost as if what she could feel was not the entire picture. As if their current ki profile had a gigantic gap. She had experienced this kind of profile plenty of times before, back during her days training under the Western Kai. Yes, there was no mistaking it. Godly ki. The divine essence that flowed through those who held the universes beholden to them. A special energy that could only be sensed by those who were either born this way, or ascended to levels of godhood. Then perhaps one might begin to concoct some ideas on what someone of his standing was doing out here in the middle of nowhere. It could have been anything, from an inspection of this part of space, to simply basking in the wonder of the things that had been made. A god's ways were far above those of mortals, that they should attempt to deduce their reasons. The warship slowed down as it passed by the signal, helmsman bringing it up to bear. The fact that he was able to align and stop it so precisely was a testament to his skill. Three miles long, and yet somehow, when the vessel halted, she was looking exactly at the Kai who indeed floated just outside her viewing dais. It was a large window, yes, a hundred yards across, but it was still a window no less. At this distance, there was no mistaking it now. She could see him clearly. And as was custom, the Suzerain gave a respectable bow that one would give to their superior. Albeit one that appeared to be heavily restrained, perhaps by her own stiff demeanour. Now if only she could communicate telepathically, but that was not part of her repertoire of talents. And since the void of space did not make for a good medium for sound, she couldn't say anything. Nevermind that her voice wouldn't get past the transparisteel panel anyway. Instead, the Suzerain swept her arm to a side, gesturing at the table and chairs to her left.
